Ok, some of you may have been wondering how me and mine have fared since the arrival and departure of Hurricane Ike. Well, here it is:
This is probably one of the most catastrophic events to hit the town that I live in. Even the old-timers are saying this is worse than any other storm they have ever seen. Hurricane Ike was something on the order of 240 miles wide and took out that much stuff too. My apartment is fine. We lost a big China-berry tree right outside our window (yay) but it did not hit us (even more yay). Several members of my church had 2-5 large trees fall, split, or get uprooted. Only two of them had any trees hit thier houses, and only one of those houses had any holes in the roof. We have been without power since 5:00 a.m. Saturday morning. Some people lost theirs as early as 12:30 a.m.
Now, for the recovery efforts. I will be singing the praises of my town (Conroe) for quite some time. The crews have been working 20 hour shifts to get the trees out of the roadway, off of electric lines, and out of peoples houses. I have spent most of my days wandering from church member to church member, helping them with tree removal, cleanup, and with anything else that can be done (Including snaking a coaxial cable up to a guys attic to run a cell phone booster..he also used an 8000 Watt generator and UPS to run his server banks and LCD TV!)
The power across the street from us came on last night, as did the power for our next door neighbors. This means that we probably have an issue right here at our apartments, so hopefully we will be the next ones up and running. No guarantees though, and even if I get power, not sure if the phone lines are up and running (I have DSL).
All in all, I thank God that me and my wife were safe during this time. Also, I am thankful for the cold front that blew through here right after Ike so that the nights have been cool enough to sleep through.
I am willing to answer any questions y'all have, but be patient. It may still be a few days before I can get back online.
