"We may not be the most chivalrous bunch, but we are heroic in our own way. We have had NO aid within these walls which makes us fairly untrusting when it comes to those we don't know."

"I will tell you what I know. And hopefully this will build at least a foundation of trust between us. If you want to fill in any details during, please do so." (and here I relate the events as I know them, including the beginning with the plans of the 'ball' or festival or whatever it was up to today, including how we met Duchess, but not including her story. Because this tale has taken so long to actually get to here, I will likely leave out some things, which perhaps my party would be able to fill in... I personally would not attempt to recap as the year or so it's taken to get this far is a long time to remember everything... :D )

"Considering this is MY home and you're the ones basically trespassing here (since I only have your "word" that the Protectors let you in", I'm even more untrusting of strangers.

However, your news is quite worrisome. I had no idea that monsters got through the glow and invaded the lower level of the palace. I haven't heard anything from the Princess or the royal court so I assumed they were doing their own thing. She probably ought to be warned if she hasn't already."

"I believe him. Were he aligned with our enemies, it seems as though he should have made some effort to avoid capture rather than summoning imaginary guards. And a sly trickster would take a less condescending approach in speaking to us. His behavior has been consistent and is, in my opinion, authentic. I suggest we release him."

*Cugel keeps an eye on Duchess while saying this to see if there is any reaction from her.*

Is she "asleep" again?

If she is, I will state the following...

"Is there some reason our prisoner keeps falling asleep that you are aware of? She claimed to have fallen asleep for a period of 2 weeks when we found her..."

To whom is that directed? I think we've established that the old man won't be answering any questions until he is released, and I doubt anyone else in our party has an answer to that one.

I really am all for freeing the old man. I worry about one of our NPC's turning on us at the first opportunity, but they can't ALL by sleeper agents trying to kill us. I don't totally trust Kurik yet, but I think he and the old man are less trouble if we leave them unrestrained. Duchess is another matter altogether. Even if she's being honest with us, SOMEONE went and killed her friend, which could pose problems for us...

What I'd like to do, if no one else has any objections, is free the old man, but exercise some caution in case he does have powerful magic spells just waiting to kill us to death. Then perhaps he'd be willing to answer any questions about Duchess and the castle.

Spidey, if we free him and he cooperates, I'd like to ask him about various, oddly placed or interesting items we've collected. I don't remember what all they are. I have a harp and a statue, but I might have forgotten something and I know I'm not the only one that's been picking things up...

Bertrem will defer to the will of the group in this matter. Personally, he is in agreeance with Oversoul

** Duchess isn't "asleep", she's more like "shell-shocked". Thus, Patrick's words go unsaid :)

Cugel, actually, all that you've picked up extra IS the harp and statue. Si'Nat's the pack rat one... :)

Cugel unties the old man. Rubbing his wrists, he says "Finally! I can't believe the Protectors let you oafs into the castle. If I were them, I'd seriously be looking for some backup team or something. Well, you better get on your way to warning the Princess."

When shown the harp and statue, he shrugs. "They don't look familiar to me - I don't believe they're castle property. But if you'd like, you can leave them here and I'll study them and see what I can come up with. It'll probably take a couple of days though as trying to find a way through the red glow permanently is a bit higher on my priority list."

"If there is such a bother, why is it you don't rush with us to inform the princess - after all - you would be more trusted by her than we would..."

"Let's see... how many people does it take to inform someone of danger? Versus how many people have a chance to find out how to get past the red glow? You do the math."

(* Did you say the statue in the other room looks like him? Or just wears the same robes? If it looks like him, I'll ask the following: *)
"Why is there a statue of you in another room which looks like you've been turned to stone while grooming? Especially given we faced a Medusa. Do you have a twin?"

(* Otherwise, I'll ask: *)

"If you can reverse petrification, there is another mage who was turned to stone by a Medusa we ran into a few rooms ago who may be able to assist you. Which direction to the Princess?"

** He looks exactly like the statue, robes and body characteristics and all

"Which is room is that? I'm not aware of any statue of me..."

(* the plot sickens... I'm starting to wonder if we rolled up in the Mystery Machine and we'll unmask this mage to find Professor Hyde-White... *)

"It's close by, I can take you there if you'd like."

(whispering...) "guess we'll see how they do, and be ready to contain any issues..."
