Computer problem....

One of my little ones knocked over my tower desktop, so now when I turn it on and try to boot it up, it whirls for a second and the HD light comes on, but then it just goes into a <beep> every couple of seconds. No images make it to the monitor, which makes me think that the HD got messed up or something. I opened it up, blew out all of the dust, disconnected and re-connected all of the wires and stuff that I could, but no luck. Anyone have any ideas?

The beeping has happened before, although I can't remember under what circumstances, and I can't remember what I did to stop it. I do remember opening it up and reconnecting everything but since it didn't work this time, not sure if it really worked last time.

Plug the monitor back in?

I'm not being facetious.... just check that everything is on.

Then try putting the system disk in and booting from that..... I think you hold down the "C" key to boot from the CD_ROM.....

Yeah, there's an IT guy, but he was out, plus it's always good to try to get answers from several sources... :)

The monitor's plugged in, checked all of those type of connections too. Gotta try to find the boot disk...

But the IT guy came back and he said it sounded like a "beep code", a sort of diagnostic sound the computer makes. He showed me what to look for on Google so now I'm looking it up... so far, my beeps could mean a system board failure or memory failure... :(

Yeah, I finally opened it up again and this time disconnected ALL of the cords going to the HD (there were two and one was particularly troublesome, so I didn't want to force it the first time around, but now I didn't care), reconnected them and it worked. Wooo!

Glad you got it working...

I just got through working with 3 laptops on the "blue screen of death"... 2 of them are working fine now and one is having to go back to manufacturer... The one going back makes clicking noises when booting... after examining the laptop - seems physical damage to the HD might be the issue, and that isn't something I can repair...

It might be a good time for you to make a backup disk or use and external 500gb, etc.to store things on... This way, if it doesn't come back for you next time - you still have "everything"...

Well, the only real important stuff on the computer are pictures, but yeah, that's a good idea...

I'm already protective enough with our stuff and have learned a lesson with backup storage...

We now have on server backup (files on same server), an entire backup server, a media backup and an additional external backup...

"You can never have enough..."

(hooray for disaster recovery planning...)
