This is sorta inspired by where some of the other posts were going. I have, in my mind, a card or two which seems to be the essence of each color. These are my opinions and why, but I welcome disagreement. tell me what you think?

Black: Pestilence (creature & player damage, but the same to you)

White: Swords to plowshares, disenchant (efficient removal w/out damage)

Blue: Counterspell, stasis (I hope I don't need to explain

Red: Lightning bolt, stone rain (some people may disagree, but I think mana deprival is important to red)

Green: lanowar elf, Craw wurm (yes, I know there are better cards, but this is the symbol of all green ever is to me: beatdown. besides, you don't get a cooler quote.)

I like how your quote made me think of a Craw Wurm being blocked by a Will o' the Wisp! :D

I probably would've added Dark Ritual to Black's entry, and chosen Birds of Paradise over the elves as a personal preference, but yeah, these cards, to me, define the colors just fine.

Even though I hate Stasis.

Flavor and/or essence of each color best described by one or two cards..........okie-dokie, I'll play.
Black-Vendetta: This is SO much like black should be; great creature control with a severe drawback.
Blue-Counterspell: It doesn't get anymore to blue's essence than this.
Gold-Sliver Queen: It potentially has all the colors flavor when mixed with other slivers ie Muscle,Heart,Talon,Winged and the black one.
Green-Llanowar Elves and Rogue Elephant: Mana Producers and Big/Cheap creatures.
Red-Incinerate and Stone Rain: Burn you and your little land too.
White-Wrath og God & Armageddon: White at it's best.

Green: Lawnmower elf, Force of Nature (big and fast)
Blue: Counterspell, just about anything that flys
White: Wrath of God, Balance (No damage but stuff is still dead)
Black: Dark Ritual, Negator or Lord of the Pit (One time fast stuff and big nasties with big draw backs)

Black: Terror, black knight, lord of the pit. These to me define the three main aspects of black, creature removal, nasty weenies, and big expensive creatures with drawbacks, the sacrifice is particularly appropriate.

Blue: Counterspell and Twiddle. Counterspell is the most basic form of countermagic, and Twiddle has a real variety of uses + it symbolizes manipulation.

Red:Lightning bolt and Shivan dragon. Direct damage and dragons.

White: Swords to Plowshares, Disenchant and White knight. Creature removal, life gaining, permanent removal, nasty weenies.

Green:Llanowar elves, giant growth, Craw wurm, creeping mold. Speed, surprise, and stompy. Plus expensive universal removal. IMHO Craw wurm was the original stompy, although Force of nature had trample and may represent it better.
