Card collection database

I have just completed sorting all my cards...... (well the ones not in decks or unopened) and now I am entering them into an Excel spreadsheet so i can "easily" find what I have and what I don't.

I tried Magicsuitcase and it sucks.
Essentialmagic.com seems nice but too much work to enter all the cards into, you have to type each card name seperately......
I am contemplating an Access database project.

What does everyone else use to track their collections?

The search functions and user interface were horrendous.... this has been a few years....... but the design was not good.

Can I import an excel file as a table into the suitcase?

I'm not sure what version you have but 7 and 8 (the latter the current version) are work fairly well and straightforward.

I don't think you can import an Excel spreadsheet though... maybe a text file but even that I'm not sure. I just manually entered all of my cards by hand.

Well for $9.99 you can buy a MTGO account.Nobody said you actually have to play, just use the collection to track and search your actual cardstock cards.It's got good filters, is pretty easy to use, and has all the card images.You don't have to type the cards in, you just increase the number you have from 0 (default) to whatever you have.

I will be creating an Access database though..... gotta learn that program sooner or later....

Does anyone know where I can get a definative list of every card ever printed?
I know that wizards has many lists, but I'm looking for one in excel if possible, and all the cards in one file.

If you download version 8 of Magic Suitcase, it will give you the option of downloading the Main Database as well. This contains all of the card stock up to fifth dawn. There are seperate update downloads for the later sets, (yes even ravinca). If you load the master set into the bottom panel, and creat your own at the top, you do not have to type anything just point and click. (you do have to type the amount of that card that you own.) Plus, you can make notes on each entry, for example, Card in Enchanted Artifact Deck, or what ever. this has helped me immensley since i can now just look and know how many cards i have, weather or not they are in decks, in a sort bin, or in my card stock.

I know what cards I have because I puruse through them quite often. It works for me. I have all of my commons seperated by color and set, my uncommons are in binders by color then sorta by set in the pages and my rares are in my 'secret rare box'
All other rares are in my trade binder.

Personally, I stopped cataloguing my stuff because it started to get "lost" (or stolen...) and after I stopped using Mr. Suitcase I found better ways to mentally do it.

So... I guess it's all up to you if you want to use it or not. Magic Suitcase is the number one tool right now to use.

Thanks for all of the help. I got the suitcase and I can see the tables, (the last time it was just an executable). I can update the tables as I want. If the front end is not up to snuff, I can just create my own (yes, I'm a database techie, but hate data entry).

Hopefully soon, I'll be able to find the cards I have and know what I don't. This has been the biggest thing keeping me back from trading, I don't know what I need.

lol, well I don't really know what I need half the time so I trade on magictraders to basically foil out my main decks.

I'm not sure where you are downloading the master database, but the master database files at the Yahoo Magic Suitcase group should be totally up to date, up to Ravnica. I should know as I am the database guy for Suitcase.

If you're going to the Magic Suitcase site at www.magicsuitcase.org, the files could be out of sync as I am not the webmaster and don't have file access to that website and so the syncing of files depends on Cary Magic, the guy who set up the website. But there's a Yahoo link from that site too and I always post there when I have made updates to the Yahoo group.

Well, I checked the www.magicsuitcase.org and their files are up to date too, so I'd recommend going there or the Yahoo group; forget about any other sites that might appear on Google as they might not be fully updated.
