Well, starting in November (or as soon as you get your hands on the card, if you don't give a rip about DCI regulations) Hippy dies to Smother. :)

Yep. And he already dies (assuming we are talking about 1cc first turn answers) to Innocent Blood.

See that's my point. because creatures are so fragile, I'm kinda glad the rit's gone in standard . . . It keeps me from losing a card early for nothing (but to cast the hippie the hard way and not get to use it is even more disheartening yet not unexpected.)

New Poll Question . . .

If Hippie were printed in Standard... I have some points I'd like to put forward.

First, REGARDLESS of the amount of removal available, Hippie is a 2/2 flier for 3 mana. That's under the present mana curve of 4-cc 2/2 fliers.

Second, Hippie also forces a RANDOM discard if it hits an opponent. That's really good in an environment where the opponent usually gets to select the discarded card.

In other words, the Hypnotic Specter would still be a good creature, regardless of how vulnerable he is to removal. Hippie got played in an environment with Force of Will, Lightning Bolt and Swords to Plowshares. People STILL Ritualled him out the first turn if it was possible.

Why?

Because IF your opponent wasn't able to deal with him, then it hurt. A lot. Yes, you can get rid of the Specter. If you couldn't, it could very well win the game.

Case in point: I played my old-school discard deck against T2 mono-black control. It had Chainer's Edict and Innocent Blood and Mutilate. I still won. The games I won most easily were the ones with an uncontrolled first-turn Specter.

In conclusion, I'd be GLAD to have Hypnotic Specter back. Gimme, gimme. He's good with or without the Ritual. Look at how much removal he attracts. :D

I agree that a first turn Hippie would still be good, despite more first turn removal in today's environment. 'Cause that's only about 4-8 cards out of 60...

However, I believe the original question was would Hippie be good on the third turn, without the Ritual? That's two or three extra draws that your opponent gets and two or three spells played (and land drops). I think he'd still be good, but not the devastating impact he had as if he came out on the first turn and your opponent still had a full hand.

see, right now, first turn duress is better in my opinion. It ISN'T random, you get to pick, and it only cost you one card for one card. second turn you can cabal therapy or Mesmeric Fiend, or Hymn ...

For what it is, it is better and less vulnerable than the first turn rit hippie which cost you 2 cards and anymore is dealt with very easilly. Hell, I'd rather 1st turn rit stupor than rit hippie right now. you replace one of your own cards, and get 2 cards right away.

Also, I'll add that I mostly play MP, where you can guarantee one of the other 3 players deals with him.
