...that my way to start a thread, or a new post! How dare you attempt a mockary (you know, the "..." going into a "..." thing.) :)

Anyway, I don't read much books unless I'm positively sure that the book I'm reading will give me some kind of knowledge that is new to me, and not something I already know, and just happen to realize it when reading a book.

You know, books don't teach us many new things, just things we already know, but are deep within us, that we think we don't have that knowledge...but we do indeed.

I think Tolkien is fairly cool.

I love his work. I recently bought a three-in-one edition of the Lord of the Rings, have The Hobbit somewhere, and have read the Silmarillion and am trying to buy it.

I can't wait for the movie adaptation of the Lord of the Rings, I just hope they don't ruin it.

I have read the Silmarillion and LOTR at least 4 times each, and "the hobbit" a couple of times.

I also played a RPG (using rolemaster)campaign in middle earht for over 4 years !!

Yeah I am quite a fan, even if I didnt read all of the unfinished tales and whatnot ...

My dad has read absolutely everything that Tolkien has ever done. He's a HUGE Tolkien fanatic. I prefer Crichton myself.

I've read them all and enjoyed them.

Why do dwarves always lose their empires? It looks like it started out with Tolkien and pretty much every other game/book has followed suit... Warhammer Fantasty comes to mind...

We should all fall onto our knees and praise the name and memory of JRR.

With out his books, the Fantasy genra would not have exploded into popularity in the 60's.

With out that popularity in the 60's, D&D would have never sold as well as it has in the 70's and 80's.

With out D&D's popularity, many other games would not have been produced, including Magic, because the market would not be there.

So, in a round about way, you can credit Tolkien with making Magic, D&D, and Warhammer, along with many other games, books and movies, possible.

I've read everything he wrote, including the dry and boring Unfinished Tales. While I was still in school, I also wrote several papers on various thematic veins in his work, including but not limited too:

The presise corolation between Free Will and the nature of Good and Evil in Middle Earth.

The state of Sauron, the Dark Lord, being more or less a non-character and at the same time being the most important character.

The relationship between old Galic myth and Tolkien's invented mythology.

...and a comparasin of Gandalf to Christ by way of the Sacrafice and other Messiah-esque theams.

I could go on and on...

re spiderman: dwarves do always lose their kingdoms, but do u think they'll bring dwarves back into magic as a creature type?

WotC has stated that they want to concentrate on thier own mythology and invented creatures, so I do not think we will see dwarves again. Same goes for orcs, which I don't think have been made since Fallen Empires. For instance, notice how they try to use Mogg as much as possible instead of Goblin.

As for the preaching, I'm taking it to the masses. I could write an article on how Tolkien made all of our favorite fantasy games possible, but would it get posted? (...since it would not strictly be an article on Magic)

Stepping out on a limb, I'd say I'd post it since it is fantasy related (and depending on how interesting it is :)). It can always go in the "Other" article section.

Yes, I am a huge Tolein fan, I own the trilogy and the hobbit and have read it a couple times... I got the Simarillion for Christmas and am in the process of reading it right now... Jeez this book is crazy, I can't read more than about 20 pages at a time, I have to go back and re-read stuff. He makes up names for different things and expects you to remember them all. So right now I'm at page 140.. mind you, the last 100 pages are all explaining generations and such... Tolkein is a genius, he's created a complete world.
