Well, without going into too much detail, I do not now and never have thought that blackout censorship of children is particularly productive.
Maybe I was lucky that my mom seemed willing to discuss certain "private" issues with me as soon as I was ready to ask, and I had no real hangups about "private" issues.
Heck, I was reading the "porn comix" (the "big little books" referred to in the article) when I was in the fifth grade. And I'll never forget the day I stumbled (literally) across my stepdad's collection of hardcore mags.
But then again my stepdad was a perv.
It's worth noting then, that despite my virtually uninhibited youth, I am a reasonably well-adjusted individual (mind-altering substance experimentation notwithstanding) having never committed any of the despicable acts that pornography is supposed to compel one to do.
It doesn't surprise me then, that there is evidence that being repressed as a child can lead to deviance as an adult. It also does not surprise me that the government and news media squelched the news almost as soon as it was released.
I don't know much about how other countries and cultures approach this sort of thing, but it seems to me that Americans are particularly repressed, and consequently we seem to have unusually high rates of violent, sex-based crimes (not to mention the nearly exclusively American phenomenon we call serial killers, but that's a rant in itself).
Now, about them genes...
What can I say, except to repeat the old cliché, d'ah...I mean, truism, "With great power comes great responsibility."
Soon we will be able to isolate and eliminate cancer, hereditary disease, congenital defects...which is wonderful.
We will also have the technology to determine the gender, hair color, eye color, complexion, personality traits, athletic ability, sexual orientation, and more, of yet-to-be conceived children. This, my friends, is bad. Very bad.
How bad?
Get out your history books, and flip back to the mid-20th century. Do some reading up on Naziism and Hitler's goals. Then you tell me. Super-race, indeed.
