Aether Storm/ "Summon" Spells

Just dug out one my old(ish) decks, and have a bad feeling the cetral premise doesn't work under today's rules. Basically the deck comprises of:

Aether Storms
Soul Barriers
Invoke Prejudice

Urza's Lands
Islands

Juggernaughts
Thran War Machines
Various big nasty artifact creatures.

The idea was, that artifact creatures are "artifact creatures" and therefore sidestepped the "summon" spells restrictions. Nowadays, they just are "creatures" and I'm guessing that the errata on aether storm affects my atifact creatures too. Am I right?

I think the way forward to fix it is to swap out the creatures and put in things like Chimeric Staff, Chimeric Idol, Jade Statue et al. But I'd rather not lose the buggernaughts if I don't have to.

Crystalkeep seems to be done right now but I think you're right, artifact creatures are now affected.

Artifact creatures are affected by the Æther Storm. I think that they were always affected by the Storm as well. When Crystal Keep comes back up I'll check to make sure, but I believe that the Storm and similar cards had associatec rulings that made them affect artifact creatures as well.

I think when Storm first came out it only affected "Summon" cards, which meant artifact creatures were okay.

Yeah, when AEther first came out, it only affectted "Summon" creatures. I remember building a mad deck with that card when Mirage came out, filled with Dreadnoughts & Dragons (Teeka's).

Nowadays, you might need to use the "loophole" creatures. One of my faves was Treetop Village from Urza's Legacy & Stalking Stones from Tempest (Xanthic Statue from Weatherlight works, too :D ).

Suggested new form for this deck, then:

Blue/Black

Aether Storms
Invoke Prejudice
Soul Barrier

Pestilence
Meekstone

Urzas land
Spawning Pools
Fairie Conclave

Chimeric Staff
Chimeric Sphere
Chimeric Idol
Xanthic Statue

Blue/Black utilities

Or

Blue/White

Use Forbidding Watchtower instead of Spawing Pool
Wrath of God etc

White has all the enchantment creatures... opals and such... and it can turn enchantments into creatures with Opalescence...

I almost forgot about the Enchantment-Creatures. Those would work fabulous, especially because white, blue, & black had the most to offer (though green still has the best one IMO: Hidden Gibbons. They can't counter, can't shock, can't even use Healing Salve or else these 4/4 monkeys awake).

Wow, The Urza Cycle really seemed to have an underlying theme that tried to break AEther Storm.

Hands down...

I think Urza's was the best single block... it had it all... gy manip, remove from game, CIP abilities, cheap but Kick @$$ stuff...

It's just the schiznit...

Every color held a favorite card of mine I still use to this day.

Black: Yawgmoth's Bargain from Destiny (A "fixed" Necro, but Hellsa more powerful)
Blue: Palinchron from Legacy (Palinchron + High Tide + Stroke = Single-color 3-card instant-death!)
Green: Rancor from Legacy (Possibly the best card from the entire set)
Red: Viashino Cutthroat from Legacy (I just love Ball Lightning variants)
White: Congregate from Saga (It was either this, Serra Avatar or Mother of Runes, but this is the only lifegaining card outside of Reverse Damage I actually use)
Artifacts: Ring of Gix from Legacy (This and Urza's Blueprints made Echo a great ability, being an Icy a turn earlier or a Jayemdae you tap for 0 mana)

There's a LOT of other great cards, but that's just what I liked using.

Sneak attack, Shivan Phoenix, Serra Avatar, Grim Monolith...

This block was so powerful - it had more cards banned, and faster, than any other set... for it's own block and type 2...

I wish there were more Urza Block games in #apprentice. I made a pretty good black deck for the Cycle:

2 Claws of Gix
2 Ring of Gix
2 Ill-Gotten Gains
2 Order of Yawgmoth
2 Phyrexian Plaguelord
2 Yawgmoth's Bargain
3 Carrion Beetles
3 Phyrexian Broodlings
4 Bone Shredder
4 Corrupt
4 Dark Ritual
4 Duress
4 Exhume
22 Swamp

What about Tempting Wurm, Wrath of God, Aether Storm, and then Eureka. Things that 'put things into play' evade the aether storm. Quicksilver Amulet or Elvish Piper, perhaps? Maybe even rebels?

they're not bad... but you don't want to help your opponent... tempting wurm and eureka might be a bit too much...

Hunting Grounds is a great idea if you could splash green - then you could run mystic snake also...

The following might help artifact/spell wise:

Belbe's portal
Cryptic Gateway
Dragon Arch
Illusionary mask
Helm of Obedience
Phyrexian Processor
Quicksilver amulet

There's a few others that make specific creature tokens, but the above all let you put just about any creature into play...

:D

And if I'm playing White anyway...

Kismet and meekstone are always fun.
