Well, the easy answer is that any expansion set is good right now, especially if you don't have any recent cards to begin with. Check the Deck forum for deck ideas that people have been working on.

If he wants all-Revised or earlier, Diabolic Edict, Wasteland, and Volrath's Stronghold are out and Contagion, Kjeldoran Outpost, and Blinking Spirit are maybe if he's allowing Ice Age/Alliances. :)
