Actually, WOTC felt red regeneration was "out of flavor" around 4th or 5th edition, which is why it either cost so much in the examples you mentioned or hasn't been since since. If they hadn't stuck to that, red regeneration might be more common...

That's better, but I still think it's possible for someone to play Magic by rote. Just going through the motions on the off-chance he/she might find "fun" (some new twist or something that they haven't seen before). It would seem pointless for someone to do that, but people do pointless...
