I was one of those... I haven't really read the books or kept up with the storyline specifically like that, so that choice was the equivalent of "I don't care" :p

It all had to do with supply and demand back then... not enough supply and too much demand (and it's really not THAT bad because unless you got it out with a Dark Ritual, you should be able to make him 4/5 every turn (barring no more spells :) ) which was a great p/t ratio for the mana cost).

#3 could perhaps refer to the Legendary Land theme, starting with Volrath's <something> (Laboratory?), going to Tolarian Academy is Urza's block, and then I don't know what else in the nex three blocks.
