I don't quite understand this. It's my understanding that you assign damage only once, as the first part of the Combat Damage step (I was mis-naming it as the Deal Damage step above). You can't "change" it. So During Blockers, turgy22 would have to respond without knowing where the damage...

Huh? What do you mean? I think by asking how damage is being dealt, it's reasonable to assume that he had nothing During Blockers and is on the Deal Damage step. Else why would he be asking the question? What do YOU think is happening during the game when someone asks you that question?
