Update on quitting the game..

Ransac

CPA Trash Man
It's been almost 15 months since I've "quit" this game and let me tell you what my involvement with Magic has been since:

I've played a little with a friend in the Opera department (who I had to teach, but enjoys the game).
I played 2-3 drafts after the third Mirrodin set came out (man, I don't even know set names anymore).

That's it. My time has been limited and with me graduating this semester (scary, isn't it?), time is even less available. I was hoping that I could get back into the mix eventually, but that appears to be an impossibility now. I haven't been able to learn strategies about these new decks (although I was rather pleased to see that annoying "Affinity" deck be slaughtered by the most recent banning. heh-heh-heh).

Anyway, just cataloging my "progress/regress".

I'm right there with you, man. My playgroup just disintegrated (I'm calling it officially dead after I'm the only one to show up for three consecutive weeks), leaving me with no outlet other than Magic Online.

C'est la vie.

Whatever you do, don't sell your cards.

I stopped playing after visions and during Oddesey block some friends at college asked me if I had heard magic, and if I was willing to learn the game. LOL I showed them my map and I started playing again. At the moment we have several playgroups that kind of stuck together. If someone want to play cards he/she can just mail about 15 people and rare are the times that at least 2-3 others like to play too.

I'm searching employment right now and I wonder how much time and energy I'll have left to play magic. I fear it will be a weekend only activity.

The guy who hosts my playgroup is moving, so that's pretty much done with (he's the "link" between me and the other guys). I'm exploring whether I might be able to play at UMBC with Azreal sometime though (and maybe Zadok, who knows? )

I'm sorry to hear it's an impossibility for you to play now :(

However, it's YOU who can make things happen. If you want to ;)

As for "quitting", never say you quit, just say your status of playing is on hiatus :D

Spidey: You've got to "NET-WORK", Man! Those guys can't be the only ones in the Balt. area who play Magic, right!? Maybe it's just me, but I've 'wittled' my way into the current play groups I'm in now:

~Mooseman & friends: I would see those guys at every pre-release for like the past four years and finally I stated talking to them, made friends and invited myself to play with them  (I'm pushy like that  ).

~GASP: I found them on the web via a link from a local PGH. gamming store and.........invited myself to play in their group  (Did I already mention that I'm pushy like that?)

~Fat Cat Books & Centerfield Comics in Binghamton, NY: I remember walking into Centerfield Comics and asking if/when & where is Magic played by it's customers. The owner told the info. and informed me that they were kind of an "Elitist" group. They were young kids (16 - 24 yrs. old) and I know how to talk to that age group; you don't, you just include yourself into the group and force them to accept you. And, eventually, thay did. Now THAT was really pushy of me.

~It's the same story for my vacations, too. One time we went to Lake Erie for a week at a hotel and enjoyed the lake scenery and local amusement parks et al. The first night I looked in the phone book for "Comic Stores" then wrote down all of the information and called them the next day. As luck would have it I found one that was hosting a Draft that very night. I made the necessary arrangments with my wife and went and invited myself to their local draft (Of course I also took my trade binder and tournament decks with me ;) ). We drafted 7th Edition and it was great. But I had to make it happen!

Another time we went to Sandusky, Ohio to go to Cedar Point (a huge amusment park). Once again, I looked up places and found one called, The Hero Zone. I went, we drafted and it was "FUN" to play with strangers.

In my defense, I do have a very assertive personality and usually get what I want. I am also 'cursed' with a high tolerance for a wide dynamic range of personalities. My 'fuse' is very long and you'd really have to be a jerk to tick me off.

Be Vigilant!

Oh, I know. It's just that I really don't have a lot of time to play Magic anyways. The get-together with the group was comfortable because I knew the host from college and consequently his friends (we even started (and stopped) a D&D game), but with my schedule, I couldn't even make the last 3 times they had a Magic session :( If I had more time, I'd probably try to find another group in earnest, but since Azrael is the only one I know around here (and we still haven't met in person yet), I just feel better trying to go to someplace where I kinda know someone.

heck, even you don't live THAT far away, what, probably an hour away from Baltimore? Your group sounds pretty fun too :)

Heavens know that I wish I could play more often. Unfortunately, all of my paper cards are 6,500 miles away and my online collection is pathetic by comparrison. I might be getting a more stable internet connection to use in my office, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to do any MTGO on it (lack of time and a glacially slow connection).

I wholeheartedly agree. Only sell your collection if you really want to quit and be done with the cardboard crack. I have quit before and so have old friends of mine. But things were much easier for me when I wanted to play again, because I was too lazy or too attached to sell my cards. They had to spend quite a bit of money and often didn't have as good of a collection as the did before.

I'm not playing much at all these days, but then again, I still have money set aside to buy cards for competitive Legacy decks, so I wouldn't say I'm planning on quitting anytime soon...

Sell some of your cards and make some investment with MTGO. There is always someone to play against, any minute of the day...minus the disagreement about rules drama, minus the dealing with somebody's ugly face being in your face whether you like them to or not.

I started MTGO on early January of this year, and was very, very skeptical about it. "Paying for digital, unreal cards?" I thought it's a big rip off. Believe it or not, managed correctly it can be way cheaper than real-life Magic. With about 20 dollars in the beginning I bought so many cards, enough to build at least 3 or 4 different decks that span across many styles.

Yeah, real cards are pretty and all, and they smell better of course. They're no good if you don't use them often though. That, and did I mention how great it can be to actually play against CPA members?

Get MTGO. It's a great deal. And this is for anyone who likes to play Magic at least once a day or more, or at least would like to play that much.

Well, I was kicked out of the local FNM place...

So I have only around 2 people to actually play against around here. What I do now is play online using Apprentice.

Yeah, that was what I was doing when I had Apprentice (I have lost it twice due to computer issues, but I have it again now) although I mainly used it for testing decks, I also had some fun playing against other people with various decks.

I just wish I could transfer all of my cardboard cards to MTGO (kinda' like a reverse redepmption policy) except that EVERY SINGLE cardboard card I have was printed before MTGO was realeased. So, it looks like I'm going to be strictly Legacy (or whatever they call it these days) w/ cardboard and barely able to play w/ MTGO...

I can definitely recommend not selling collections. I've done it twice and regretted it both times. I do miss my 38 dual lands. Having 5 is not as fun.

I'll give you a hint. It doesn't have anything to do with getting hit by a semi-truck. But it might have something to do with being insane!

KJ: Wow, you must be at the far end of PA, near New York. I thought you were just near Philadelphia or someplace close by the Maryland border. Oh well, I guess you won't be seeing me anytime soon :)

Hello again, Sac-Man!

I second DUke: I'd love to see you on Magic Online again.

Also, Spidy-- Good luck getting in contact with Zadok. Every time he gets on Magic Online and is messaged, he automatically dissappears. I don't know what the problem is...
