Tiny rant...

Okay, this isn't really a rules question, just a little rant of sorts...

You see, I was at school eating lunch yesterday (my last day :D ) and these guys were playing Magic. This guy I knew had apparently decided that he could change a card in his hand into a disenchant and they wouldn't stop arguing about it, so they just stopped playing. The other guy wanted to know if anyone else wanted to play him that didn't have a problem with him using proxies...

Well, that explained why his opponent had thought it all right to change the cards in his hand. Now, even though I took Hel, Goddess of Death (my proxy deck with 20 moxes) apart, I figured that my newbish opponent would still have a hard time beating my proxy deck that I did happen to have (a Type I Storm deck I was testing, which was why it was all proxies).

So, first turn I drop a Gemstone Mine and say go. He drops an Urza's land, rather than some broken card, so I felt pretty safe, then he says go and I Brainstorm EOT. Second turn I drop City of Brass and Duress him with my Mine. Looking at his hand, I see a few other cards, but what catches my interest are the two proxied Voltaic Keys (so obviously his deck's not Type I legal, but it's not good either probably, so I'm thinking I'd predict victory for myself anyway) and two Time Vaults...

The proxies are printouts done on some computer that have the card name/cc/text/etc. but they have the texts from the original cards, rather than the Oracle text. I could see where this is going by now, and most other experience players could too. I picked something, one of the Keys, I think and next turn he tries to tap the Key to Untap the Vault, then tap the Vault to take another turn. I say that he can't, and he asks why not. I REALLY don't feel like explaining it to him though...

So, I notice that at the table behind me is this guy who's much more into the rules than me. He wants to be a judge or something. Me, I have only recently gotten used to 6th edition rules. Rather than explain things to the guy myself, I just yell "JUDGE!" and this draws the attention of the people sitting at that table. Didn't help though, since the guy was under the impression that what we were talking about was Time Vault being reprinted, and that he could have his combo work by proxying the "old" Time Vault. No one had said anything to this effect, and it took me several times of repeating myself to get it through his head...

All that this work resulted in was him being like "too bad it doesn't work then, but most of the people I play against don't know that, so I'll still be able to use it against them..."

Okay, so it ended up being not so tiny of a rant as I planned, but I just had to share this story...

Meh... someone trying to bend the rules in their favor again.

If they push it, either get a judge or just say "I do not play with people who do not follow the rules." Simple as that.

This guy wasn't trying to bend the rules in his favor though...

He was just such a "newb" that he probably didn't know there are judges for the game. I mean, he didn't know what an errata is. I was trying to help him out by explaining to him what I could. I think I probably did, but it took some effort to get it through his head...

Which is, I think, understandably frustrating...

But yeah, I wouldn't play someone who wouldn't follow the rules or who bends the rules or who has his/her own personal version of the rules or whatever. Not much of a point, unless I can do the same. And then it's just chaos. And not the happy, violent kind of chaos where I run away with lots of money, but the stupid chaos where I only waste my energy. I don't think this situation could have escalated to something on that level though, but your point stands...

Interesting anecdote.

I agree with what you say about not playing someone who doesn't agree to the common set of rules and the same analysis that this seems to be just a newbie who wasn't aware of how things went regarding errata. Good you helped him out :)

This is a common thing everywhere - as older groups of players still play, but don't adhere to new rules changes as they don't care about tourneys, and usually have their small play group and no one else..

see my sig...;)

And physics don't apply unless you think you're human.

Which is why I can fly. :D

I haven't yet found an answer for that one. Not human, though, that's for sure.

interesting antedote...so crazy that I don't even know how to comment on it properly. I suggest you walk around with a print out of oracle.

tiny question. I don't remember exactly what 6th edition rules are, but I could have sworn there were differences between them and 8th. So I am a little puzzled when you say you are finally getting used to 6th edition rules.

Crystalkeep used to have a Pocket PC version of Oracle, I think. I don't know if anyone else picked it up since they stopped updating (of course, you need a Pocket PC for that to be useful :) )

I think any differences are minor, like having the player take his automatic draw instead of putting it on the stack.

In 6th Ed. they completely swapped the old rules system from 5th for a new one (the stack comes to mind). They also went back and errata'd all the old cards and all that. As far as I know, nothing so extensive went on with 8th ed. But if there is something, do tell me...

Really, I'm not much of a rules expert or anything. But I'm not completely ignorant either...

I think there's been slight tweeks to the rules...but nothing so major as was 5th to 6th.

Most of it was updating...

overall - if not in a tourney - don't expect others to play by DCI rules - even if explained to them...;)

They've updated the rules a little bit from 6th to 8th; however, the big deal is the renumbering of the rules in 8th edition. That was the 'big change;' and it was only cosmetic.

...though it did throw me off. :D

I wondered about that also - until I read somewhere it had changed...
