"The Road to Tourneyland: as viewed by a 'one-time' serious scrubie."
This is my attempt to get better at writing, so if you have any serious input on the contents or actual writing aspect, just PM me, otherwise, the usual haranging is acceptable.
When: Jan. 4, 2001
Where: Exit 13
Format: Standard
Round 1 U/W Control vs. Green Beats (Ryan)
Game 1
Ryan's been comming to the shop noww ever since the summer. He's the kind of player that still believes in playing non-tournament worthy decks at a tournament (That's not a SLAM, because I still WANT to do that, I just have more restraint now). Anyway, his first couple of turns create some sweat for me (River Boa, 2x Shyshroud Ridgebacks and a Seal of Strength), I'm a little short on answers (That's what I get for keeping a two land opening hand-1x Plains and 1x Island :(), by turn sevem he has me down to ONE LIFE! I have two Plains and two Islands in play and a Teferi's Moat in my hand with NO OTHER MANA SOURCES. I topdeck an Island and play Teferi's Moat naming Green (Man, you coulda knocked Ryan over with a feather at that point). I topdeck a Blinding Angel the next turn and he concedes.
Game 2
Almost the same story except he only got me down to 4 life. BTW, I thought Green Beats was supposed to suck in T2, am I wrong?
1-0
2-0
----------------------------------------------------
Round 2 U/W Control vs. B/R Machine Head (Adam, Ryan's friend)
Game 1
Here's the quick of it, Adam is hitting me with some red 3/2 creature that can't block and I finally Wrath it away. I start to beat him down with a Blinding Angel and HE finds an answer, Agonizing Demise and I am without countermagic, sorta :). I'm at 12 and he's at 10, and it's his turn; Ritual, Ritual, Ritual, taps 2x Mountains for red and a Swamp and, you guessed it, URZA'S RAGE!!!!! I was with Misdirection, Man, the look on his face was fabulous!
Game 2
Now, VOID, VOID is a very good card I let him take away my Teferi's Moat, a Blinding Angel and a Mageta. Void is good, but my topdecking skills are better this night. Next turn, Blinding Angel! I win via Slow Angel Death! :)
2-0
4-0
----------------------------------------------------
Round 3 U/W Control vs. G/W Blast-O-Geddon (Anthony)
Game 1
First of all, Anthony is a former JSS qualifier and is waaaaay better than me at this game, but he starts out lamenting about having to play a U/W Control deck, I wonder why ;)? It was horrible for him, no Blastoderm or Cloaked Charging Troll scared me, I drew 4x lands (2 plains and 2 islands), 2 Wrath's and a Blinding Angel, Yeah, Sparky! He had no chance and I win via slapping down the Angel (he conceeds on resolution!)
Game 2
In came the the 3x Mageta's from the sideboard, and I get another fantastic draw. However, near the end of the game he tried to Armadillo Cloak my Angel, the last time this happened in a tournament I let it go, not thinking of the consequences. I counter it and he conceeds because he's at two. :)
<Insert Queen's "Another One Bites The Dust">
Oh yeah, winning feels MUCH better than losing :)
3-0
6-0
----------------------------------------------------
Round 4 U/W Control vs. U/B Control (Billy borrowed this deck from me this night and it was an Ivasion Block Only Deck)
Game 1
The Evil Shop Guru (you just knew he had to be reported in this report somehow) was lurking around the room (well he had to, he's the judge), anyway, he decides to sit down and watch the match, INTERACTIVELY! He literally tells my usually dosile opponent what to play and when to attack, the nerve! I protest and he gives me a warning, CHRIST, this is not even a sanctioned tourney! Billy would not have attacked as many times as he did because that's not his nature and for THAT matter, neither is that the nature of the deck! He wins, I whine and am told I up for a possible "game loss" if I keep it up, WTF!!!!????
Game 2
I am soooooo rattled that my rhythm and game tempo is way off. I lose, again, to my own deck. Billy never said a word.
3-1
6-2
----------------------------------------------------
Well, as usual, it's 8:30 and the owner wants to go home and there are four 3 & 1'ers in the house. THE EVIL SHOP GURU said, "Alright, it's a four-way tie, everybody gets $5 credit, goodnight!"
The entry fee was $2 and I know I shouldn't complain, but when I got home I figured it out, The person I lost to was 3-1, the people that the others lost to had worse records, doesn't that mean that I was the LONE winner. Oh well, I'm chalking it up to: "Maybe I should find another place to Game"
Comments are welcomed!

If the guy cheats and doesn't even bother to finish his tournaments, you should definitely find another place to play.

Oh, and the writing was pretty good. The game descriptions were well done.

Does the "Evil Shop Guru" own the store? If not, you might mention his antics to the owner.

Thats a raw deal...I mean, for once you were doing good in a tournament...;)...But if you're paying this guy money for tournaments, cards, or those shiny Magic boxes, get out of there...Hes obviously a jerk and doesn't deserve your money or customer loyalty...And when you finally do get out of there, try to get the other kids out of there too...Maybe you'll be able to shut down his whole business...

Well, if he is on 4 or less life, the Angel still kills him with a Cloak on. it deals the four damage, and then the gain life goes on the stack.. but he dies before he gains life.
Same thing for Flesh Reaver + Hatred in Extended.

Glorious.

You know, we have a problem with people offering help during tournaments too. We punt them out if they do it. If the Evil Shop Guru is doing it...I agree with Apollo. If he doesn't own the store, complain to the guy that does. If he does, find someplace else to play.

Gizmo: It's the "Stack" concept that gets foggy during tourney play, that is a MAJOR MONKEY on my back that I need to work on. I'm getting better and better during tourney play but I still have a long way to go.
Istanbul et al:
Here's the deal; THE EVIL SHOP GURU is planning on buying the shop (along with his crony-EVIL SILENT GUY). AND, right now, he's the only DCI judge we have (Doug <insert slap happy clarinet solo here>, is working on getting his level 1 DCI judge papers or whatever and it'll be a while) and as for going somewhere else, well, I really like the current owner, who I'm sure is somewhat courting TESG and ESG, and besides, I am a hard core supporter of local business, our town suffered greatly during the 80's & 90's with the Steel Mills closing and folks leaving, so I'd hate to travel 25 min. to the next town to spend money and play there (although they DO have more folks who've Q'd than we do).
Lastly, the word is out at the shop that I plan on seriously writting a letter to thhe DCI to file a former complaint (I'm NOT though), oh well, thanks for the input so far!
I love you guys! :)
well, not LOVE, but you know what I mean

Isty: I understand the desire to support local businesses. But if the product at those businesses is lousy, those principles have to be reconsidered. Perhaps you should buy your cards there, but game elsewhere?

No, simply tourney elsewhere. The shops I buy and play at are not necessarily the shops that I'd go to tourneys at.

Hola Fellow Smelly Gamers,

Evil Shop Owner Guy sounds like he either a) thought this was such a casual match that playtips were not out of order, or b) is a Bad Guy. While I would have protested to high Heaven if he pulled crap like that on me in a "real" tourney, I'm not sure if I would've been as pissed as you were in a tourney where - let's be realistic- fun was the main objective. However, he was way out of line by threatening you with punishment; that's where I would've jumped up, grabbed his person and taken him outside. People that use their "authority" to play tough seriously need their butts kicked. I get the impression that this guy is in line for a beating.

As always, I could be wrong. But, generally, don't let anyone get in your face for standing up. Or something. Evil Guy can threaten me with a DQ all day, slick, but if he gets out of line, he will hear about it. Loudly.

John Friggin' Rizzo
John was probably supposed to figure out who the Evil Bastard was, but couldn't. Damnit!
