Score another victory for Team Loser

Yes that's right. Your's truly, Ransac, has won his first War Room FNM tournament last night, the prize being a foil, promotional Jackal Pup. I was playing a deck that all of my friends said was not good enough and it needed to be changed to win. Boy, I proved them wrong.

Here's the deck

4 Absorb
4 Counterspell
4 Force Spike
4 Fact or Fiction(this is the only card I doubted putting in)
2 Arcane Laboratory
4 Millstones (This is a kill factor for the deck)
4 Howling Mine (This always won me the game)
4 Meddling mage
3 Rout
3 Wrath of God

9 Island
7 Plains
4 Coastal Tower
4 Adarkar Wastes

I entered the tournament hoping to see a lot of Control decks at the tournament, which the majority of it was. While waiting for 1st round pairings, my friends told me that against all control decks, Howling Mine would help them more than kill them, and they told me I would have a hard time that night.

1st round: Ransac vs Andrew Phillips
1st game: I see death grasp and nether spirit and quickly try to get my combo in play, but I keep suffering from nether beatings. Then, I noticed that I have 2 meddling mages in play and attack. I drop a 3rd one the following turn and kill him with beatdown, something I thought I'd never see and will never see again for this deck.
2nd game: See game 1.

I couldn't believe it! I won the match by straight beatdown with meddling mages. My friends told me I was lucky that I was playing that opponent though, besides although he was a very good player, he was merely playtesting his deck. I thought "So am I."

2nd round: Ransac vs Travis ?????
I can never remember this kid's last name, because there are 2 Travis's at this tournament.
1st game: The deck works like it should. I set up my combo, Wrath his creatures away when I am at a low life(I usually stop between 1-7 life), and drop an arcane lab.
2nd game: I only see 2 land the whole game. He kills me with a double sinister strengthed Cinder Shade.
3rd Game: I draw into a great hand and never look back. 2nd turn howling mine. 3rd turn millstone. 4th turn millstone and howling mine. 5th turn wrath. I foce spike with while he's down and drop an arcane lab the 6th turn. that was the game.

Doing fairly well, I scout to see how my friends are doing. one of them is 1-1, the other 2 are 0-2.

3rd round: Ransac vs I forget his name
1st game: I'm playing against a red, white, and blue Control/beatdown deck. This player beat my 1-1 friend in the 2nd round. I keep dropping howling mines and he looks at me like I'm crazy, and always let's them through. Eventually, I wrath his creatures away and lay and Arcane laboratory for the win.
2nd: Basically a repeat of game 1.

I'm ecstatic! I'm 3-0! I hadn't done this well here in at least 3-4 weeks!. And what's more, the standings are posted and I'm no. 1!!!!!!

4th round: Ransac vs Aaron Padwa(no.2)
This kid hadn't played magic in a while and built a successful Fires deck while waiting to play. Before the whole tourney started, I recommended that he played some Thunderscape battlemages in the deck, but he replies that he would if he had any.
1st game: Perfect hand. I lay an arcane laboratory after I Rout and I seal the victory.
2nd game: The little bugger sided in Hull Breach. He decimates me.
3rd game: Close call at the end. after supposingly sealing his fate, he Obliterates (note, in second game, I sided in Sacred Ground, assuming that I would see that card in the 2nd game. When I didn't see Obliterate 2nd game, I sided them back out).
I played a few meddling mages, but his Penumbra bobcat was holding back the attack. Eventually, we both start succeeding attacks and when I'm at 3 life, he cast Urza's Rage. I lose. I look at my next card and it's the Island I could've used to absord the Rage.

Well, it's only a 4 round pre-leminary tourney and final standings are up.

1. Aaron Padwa
vs.
4. Chris Baker

Chris beats down the undefeated Aaron with his Big Blue deck.

2. Chris Mahaffey
vs.
3. Ransac

I MADE FINAL 4! I MADE FINAL 4!

1st game: I draw into another perfect hand and sweep his Fires deck clean.
2nd game:He almost kills himself with his Citys of Brass, but gets a shivan wurm into play and beats me.
3rd game: I have the game in so many ways. Before he Obliterates, I have depleted at least 3/4 of his deck and has almost killed himself with his 2 City of Brass. After it, I play a howling mine and a meddling mage. He makes the mistake of attacking me when I have plenty of life and him with no blockers. He was at 2 life and I attack with my meddling mage.

I MADE FINALS!!!!! I MADE FINALS!!!!!!!

Final: Ransac vs. Chris baker.
Game 1: He let's 4 howling mines reach play and I mistakenly play Arcane lab before I play Millstone, seeing as he too is playing Counterspells. He keeps attacking me with Air Elementals and I keep wrathing. Eventually I'm out of wraths and I only have 1 Rout left in library. During my turn, I draw into Rout and attempt to cast it. He DOESN'T HAVE A COUNTERSPELL IN HAND!!!!!!!!! On top of that, he repulsed his creature and left himself with 4 cards in library, which he will die during his draw step due to 4 howling mines.
Game 2:I draw ANOTHER perfect hand and never look back. I sided out the Arcane labs and wins EVERY counter war I get into. Game 2 ends when he has 1 card in library and Accumulates for suicide.

I did it! FNM IS MINE!!!!!!! And Team Loser gets another point for the Scale.

Congrats, Ransac!

On a semi-related note, was the Aaron Padwa you mentioned in the report 12, has freckles, and reddish hair? Because last time I played him, (he comes to the Comic Company, the place that holds really easy to win, small tournaments, when Sol Malka doesn't come) it seemed like he REALLY couldn't make a T4 at war room events, let alone any events. I guess he got better. (Great, another person and STUPID FIRES DECK to watch out for at my local store. Good thing I play burning bridge.b)

Just wondering. :)

Silly question...

How often did you find yourself naming 'Chimeric Idol'? If one pushes through countermagic, you have very little recourse.

Suprisingly, not many people were playing Idols. However, I just got back from a Two-headed Giant tournament, in which myself(playing this deck) and fellow Team Loser member Spencer(playing Ashes) won the whole thing.

So, score yet ANOTHER victory for Team Loser.
