Ransac and Apollo Meet: Tourney Report

Ransac

CPA Trash Man
Last night, I went to the War Room to engage in another Friday Night Magic tournament, but I was expecting company. Apollo was on vacation and was visiting Marietta. So, I invited him to FNM and he showed. He didn't have a deck, so I let him use my Balancing Tings deck. I don't remember the exact details of his matches, but he got beat down by Psychatog in the first two rounds, won against a rogue Psychatog deck, and then lost against a U/W/G rogue deck.

He told me that he had a great time and I got him to sign a Commander Eesha for me(to add to my CPA signed cards collection). Unfortunately, I forgot to bring a Ransack for me to sign for him. I may have to mail one to him when he returns home.

Okay, my tourney report. I went 2-2, but I didn't expect much because I hadn't played in a Type 2 tourney since Judgment became legal and didn't know what to expect. Plus, I didn't have all of the things for the deck, so I'm pleased with what I did. Oh, and I forget the names of my opponents.

First round: R/G New Madness(me) vs. Rogue Green
Game 1:1st turn elf. I get mongrel 2nd turn, discard Anger, Roar and two Rootwallas. 3rd turn I play the wurm and he scoops.
Game 2: No green mana and I get my oink handed to me on a platter.
Game 3: Basically game one all over again.
1-0: 2-1

Second Round: Me vs. U/W/G Rogue
This was who Apollo lost to his last round
Game 1: He gets stalled on mana and I burn all his elves to the ground.
Game 2: He manages to live long enough to cast Mirari's Wake and two Phantom Nishobas. I scoop.
Game 3: Another 3rd turn scoop for one of my opponents.
2-0: 4-2

Third Round: Me vs. U/G/B
Game 1: I beat him before he could draw into any black mana sources. Plus, his only green sources where Y. Coasts. He scooped after five turns.
Game 2: I've never seen a deck like this before and he stomps me completely. It wasn't unpredictable, but I've never seen anyone take the time to build a decks with as many expensive cards as this one had.
Game 3: I surprised him by siding in Kavu Chameleons. He didn't expect them at all, judging by the expressing on his face. But, Chainer's Edicts took care of them. Eventually, his COTHs and Spiritmonger's beat the leaving poop-dumplings out of me.
2-1: 5-4

Round Four: Me vs. U/G Madness
Game 1: He gets decimated by turn four.
Game 2: I couldn't find Mongrel and I get run over by several Wurm tokens.
Game 3: This had the most irritating moment of the night. If I won this match, I had a chance at Top 4. I got him down to 3 before his army appeared and, after slowly destroying my forces, got me down to 4. I lick my lips and draw into what I hope is either a Violent Eruption or a Fiery Temper. It's a Llanowar Elf. So, like the good sport that I am, I flashback the firebolt to get him to 1 and extend my hand in congratulatory defeat. I then decided to see how far away a win condition was. I flip over the top card of my deck and it was.............a Fiery Temper. NOOOOOOOOOOO! If I had the capability to have ONE MORE TURN!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MY DEFEAT!!!!!! IT HURTS, MOM!!!! IT HURTS!!!!!!!!!
2-2: 6-6

So then, after regaining consciousness, I say goodbye to Apollo, who had to leave, and I watch the finals. Turns out that the two people that beat me had to play each other in the first round of the finals(more swear words emanating in my mind from the Player in me, who had momentarily subdued the Sportsman in me). The person who beat me in the 3rd round won and then promptly lost in the finals against an Opposition deck(SQUIRRELS RULE!!!!!!!!!!!).

Well, that's all for this report.

I tried really, really hard to get there. I was in Americus (down south) when I read about yours and Apollo's plan, and I rushed like my yee-haw was on fire, but I had mucho car trouble between Americus and my Macon home. Once I got that squared away in Macon, grabbed my cat and her stuff, and headed up in my girlfriend's car...well, it ended up being like 11pm by the time I got to Douglasville and got Wish (the kitty) settled in. Didn't really think it was worth heading to the War Room at that point.

So...I'm sorry, Apollo (and Ransac), that I missed you there. However, I'm in Douglasville for several days to come, so if there are other plans amiss that I fit into, please let me know.

And Ransac: Sorry it didn't work out for ya. I'm sure the Elves would have helped you if they could (they're such good elves, and they deserve our votes...).

Ransac: I told you the hippos would get you. Who do you think put the Elves on top of your deck? I tried to warn you, but you just wouldn't take them seriously. I hope you've learned your lesson... :p

Anyway, if you're interested in the details of my matches, here ya go:

Round 1: Psychatog
Game 1: I play like an idiot in this game. I probably would've lost anyway, but my inexperience with the deck, and the fact that I was nervous as heck, really ran me into the ground. My most grievous errors were trying to Disrupt a Psychatog and trying to cast Obliterate with 6 mana, neither of which work very well. But what really killed me was a Balancing Act I never should've attempted, that kept me from having the mana to Obliterate later. I end up just losing to a pair of Familiars and a Psychatog that jumps in at the end to finish me off.

Game 2: This time I do not play like an idiot. But I lose anyway. A late Obliterate followed by two Mongooses look like they're going to give me the game, but my opponent draws into a Psychatog just in time to save himself and finishes me off.

Round 2: Psychatog
Game 1: I don't do a whole lot. 2 Familiars, and a Psychatog, do me in. I was one mana short of Obliterating when he killed me.

Game 2: Same thing, basically, except I have the mana, just not the Obliterate. I try to Chant a Balancing Act through at the end, but he has plenty of counters.

Round 3: Psych(not-a)tog
--This is a funny guy decked out all in GA Tech clothes, but doesn't go to Tech and doesn't really think he's going to. And it's Psych(not-a)tog cause it looked like Psychatog, but he tells me there aren't any 'togs in it. So. Onward.

Game 1: He's whacking me with 2 Familiars (every time I turned around somebody had 2 Familiars out against me), but I Fire them both and he regenerates 1, so the other dies. On his next turn, he taps down to one mana to play another Familiar. On my turn, I chant him, Balancing Act, and play Terravore. I win. It turns out, by the way, that he'd played against the deck when ransac was using it and just forgot there were Chants in it.

Game 2: ransac comes over and watches most of this one. He's hitting me a bunch, when I successfully Obliterate everything and float 6 mana. He floats nothing, so I plop 2 18/18 Terravores and win. I am very happy, for I did not totally humilate myself.

In between rounds, I play ransac for fun, and use one of his deck that is full of hippos. Over two games, he kills 3 hippos. I inform him that he has enraged the hippos and shall pay for his sins in the near future, but alas, he doesn't believe me. The next round, of course, the Elves "found their way" to the top of his deck.

Round 4: The rogue guy
--This is a guy in his first ever tournament, who isn't bad at all, but is the type of player I would just destroy back home, and would probably normally beat here. Thus, I am not at all happy with the events that follow.

Game 1: I have 3 lands in my opening hand, and don't draw another until 2 turns before I die. This is over about 15 turns and despite 4 cantrips, in a deck that I believe has 28 lands. I begin to suspect that ransac has somehow played a cruel trick and removed about 20 of those lands.

Game 2: I draw plenty of land and realize that the cruel trick was in removing all of the kill methods. I'm ready to Obiterate for quite a while, and just can't draw a Terravore or Mongoose or anything to play afterwards. Eventually, I have to just blow everything up with nothing to back it up, and he has that random phasing guy with the ridiculous name (yeah, you all know what I mean:p). So I die.

And so, that was my tournament. I really liked the deck, but definitely could've used a week of practice with it before the tournament. Heck, I could've used a crash-course on which cards were in type 2, cause I kept thinking to myself "hmm, are there any counters in the environment that can be played with a blue and an off-color? Is Memory Lapse still legal?" But I had fun, and ransac was cool, even if Sammy couldn't be bothered to get his sorry butt up there.:)

And remember, don't kill the hippos!

Oh, and if anyone ever comes up to the Cleveland area (grand prix, maybe?) maybe I can show you my hometown.

No, sadly, there were very few girls at ransac's tourney. I'll be eagerly awaiting Mindy's next visit, though (more pretzels?!).
