"A Tale of two Mages; one BIG, one little"
My daughter is 9 and I had shown her how to play Magic awhile ago. She has played the pre-cons from Portal II, 7th & 8th edition. Well, it's been a long time since we've played against each other but two days ago I just said to her as an incentive to finish her homework, "Hey, if you get done quick enough we'll play a game of Magic." I didn't really think that would motivate her though. But it did and she quickly finished the last of her homework.
She came downstairs to our game room (cellar) and I pulled out the pre con Portal II decks. She always gets to choose what deck she plays and what deck I get to play (one time I played the Blue deck and she'll never pick that one again for me to play, she doesn't even want to play it because she said it's a 'no fun' deck
) anyway I play green and she almost always plays the Nightstalkers black deck.
We play one game and I win, now I know you're supposed to let your kids win but I don't share that philosophy, I show her afterwards how she could've won and/or I pause the game to explain things to her even if it's a way for her to do damage to me but I never throw the game and she knows that.
Off to bed and she seemed okay with the loss but really liked the idea of doing something with me, she likes me pretty much unconditionally
Last night (11/21) she finishes her homework right after school and is waiting for me to come home to play again. I told her at 7 pm we'll 'battle'.
7 p.m. arrives in a timely fashion but not quick enough for her, she comes down and I remember my promise and I'm feeling a little bad about her losing last night. So I figured I might let the game be close..........nope, she beat me game one. I played the P2 Goblins Deck and she of course played Nightstalkers. The game went longer than I had expected, I played a Wildfire and put alot of her creatures into the graveyard and she only had two land left after the WFire. I got mana hosed but was starting draw little Goblins and I started attcking her. She finally runs into a a land clump and then draws a sorcery that puts all of her Nightstalkers from her graveyard to play, next turn I play another Goblin and cringe. Her turn, she swings with all and I die.
Okay, she's beaten me at once before but the look of victory on her face was precious. Game two, she switches to Green and she gives me white. Well, we're matching creature for creatue and I am not drawing anything that gives me the edge over her deck. I finally get some flyers and she Hurricanes for 3. Tough break. Then with her horde poiused to attack she plays a card that says all of my creatures has to block her one attacking creature (Lure?). She swings for yet another big kill.
I kiss her good night and she runs upstairs to tell Mommy how she beat Daddy, YOY!
