Make No Mistake

Interesting article of his Top 20 Magic Mistakes. Some highlights:
  • #2: Urza's Saga
    Urza's Saga is the only time in the eight years that I've been working at Wizards that R&D as an entirity got pulled into the president's office and was yelled at.
  • #7: Underpowered Card Design: Sorrow's Path (Ferret should love that :) )
  • #18: Card Frames: Artifact Border - says should be fixed in Fifth Dawn
  • #19: Terry Borer's "Do you Have Any Fast Effects" - remember reading about that in the Duelist a LONG time ago :p

I found about a dozen errors...likely I missed stupid ones that I'd have to read Sideboard articles and follow R&D crew rosters to catch. But numerical references, card caveats, and grammatical errors bow down before me.

Those "puzzles in a puzzle" things are too hard for me. I barely could do his puzzles in the Duelist...

:: Did you all notice there wasn't a #12???

Here's what I remember finding:

(SPOILERS, duh.)

1) The greatest mistake is not admitting when you make one.
- Winston Churchhill {Churchill}
2) Because when things are going you're way ... {going your way}
3) Homelands release (the fall of '94). {Homelands was released in October '95}
4) The section on Saga's brokenness is illustrated by a broken beaker, the symbol for Destiny.
5) Time Spiral, Frantic Search, Tolarian Winds {Tolarian Winds is not a freebie}
6) If something's was ... {Improper contraction}
7) The only way to do it with any consistency is to give the land to your opponent and then continually tap it. {Current oracle on Sorrow's Path puts the tap-damage in the ability, so Donate/Manipulator does nothing.}
8) The best example of this is the five Circles of Protection from Tempest. {There is a sixth, Shadow.}
9) No #12.
10) In rare green there was a creature called Whipoorwill. {The Dark had no rares, technically, only uncommons.}
11) Whipoorwill (in text), Whipporwill on the image's Name line (but not Type line or flavor text.) {Whippoorwill.}
Potential) But the Planeshift development team didn't like the idea that the card hosed multi-colored cards {Dead Ringers is Apocolypse, though that doesn't mean the Planeshift guys weren't upset.}

Ummm...yeah. He should really read the Oracle rulings...however, I found ways to make it work w/ En-Kor and Mog Maniac...quite deadly...

"You actually own FOUR of those?"

Did you all read Randy's article about the artifact face change? Anyone else think that it doesn't make much difference??

Why don't they just admit they were wrong and go back to the old, easily distinguishable color?

Well, enough people have spoken up about it here (as well as countless people on MTGO). Maybe they'll listen...

-Ferret

"...and maybe they'll reprint Black Lotus..."

Actually, when I saw it, I thought that it was easier to tell the difference with the update between artifacts and white cards. Of course, I think now it will be harder to tell the difference between artifact and black cards...

I agree - let's put a nice bronze color on it rather than trying to mess with the "silver".

Is it possible for the CPA to have an influence on the game the way the whiny pros do??? :eek:

I read in a SCG article about the CPA being formed because of the Waylay erratum. Heh. Funny to see us mentioned by those stuffy folks. But its funny to think that since those times of past, WotC has really tried to stay away from errata.

Possible to do something like that again?

I seriously doubt WOTC has stayed away from errata just because the CPA was created in response to Waylay. It's just common sense to stay away from it because it adds general confusion, or "clunkiness" as you say in your article :)

Hmm, you have a good point there.

So...I better call off the project to build a large wooden badger to sneak into WotC as part of my BRING BACK LLANOWARS campaign...
