Magic Academy...

I was flippin' through a video-game magazine, and through all the X-Box and GameCube ads they have, they also had a four-page commerical on a computer game (I think it's a compter game) called Magic Academy. Yes, a close examination, and it was: Magic the Gathering Academy...

The ad doesn't say anything about the game, or whatever it is. It shows the game's box cover, and I think it's similar to the old Magic computer games...but this one has 7th Edition cards!?

I dunno, I'm confused. Does anyone know about this MTG Academy thing? I need some info...I always liked playing Magic on the computer...

Not a clue.

WotC will be releasing "Magic Online" sometime next year, we'll see how THAT pans out. I've never heard of this one, though.

Related to Magic: TG computer games...

Over at The Underdogs, the Microprose Magic computer game is in their Belated Hall of Fame. With all the bugs in it, I was of the opinion that it's not exactly Hall of Fame material. An above average game for how it translated the card game to the computer, but not really Hall of Fame. Any opinions?

Magic Acadamy is a store-only "Ambassador" program, or an unoffensive store-only "Guru" program that has not much of a reward for the people in it...

Matter of fact, The decks that it uses to teach people magic basics arn't the best in the world, though they're a little better than the ones Starter had...

If you want to have a good teaching aid, I made one up myself using seventh edition that has proved VERY usable. it's kinda unique, too...

All I needed to do to get it worthy for mass distribution is wrighting an "index" of explaining all of the cards.

Anyone want to test it out/work on the card glossary? I'll attach it.

Also, the computer game is an AWESOME achievement. The computer isn't as intelligent as an expert player, and drawing only one land and not being able to mulligan is a BAD thing, but all in all, It's a remarkable achivement, and WAAAAYYY too addicting. Matter of fact, I wouldn't sell my copy for the $50 I payed for it... I just wish I could get the expantions, as well.. :{ )
It's without a doubt worth mentioning. It's also easy to "hack" the sound effects. Every time I go into a dungeon, there's a Goblin Polka BAnd somwhere playing in the background, as well as Mr. T telling somthing to "Shuttup, Foo!" I'm somtimes accosted in the field by a wizard saying "sucka" or "Awww, NUTBUNNIES!" I also found a way to edit the coinflip information so I don't sit there for three seconds, it just shows the sides of the coin...

E-mail if you want details on those actions... One complaint: the Deck Builder/Just Play Magic feature does'nt work... :{ (

I managed to get the original computer game for $15
then proceeded to pick up spells of the ancients for $15 and Duel of the planeswalkers for $15. You think the original is fun play it with spells of the ancients where there are dual lands and the opponents decks start getting bad. I was happy with it. It was really good for learning the turn actions though now it would throw everyone off.

They get "bad" as in they aren't competitive or as in they become more devious?

I'd like to pick up the old games, but not at $15 each...maybe $15 for the set.

My main reason for not liking the Microprose game was, indeed, the AI. Now, Magic is about as complicated as a game CAN get - Tactics can be taught for RTSGs, but not for a game as complicated as Magic. As a result, the computer made some CLEAR blunders, almost every game. Some stories:

The computer Bolted me when I had a 3/3 out to his 0 creatues, with him at 3. I was at 18.

I gave the computer a speedy R/W deck with two Wraths to clean out the board if too many creatures came out. The 'puter would consistantly Wrath while I controlled nothing and he had several creatures.

I once fell into a bad losing position against the 'puter, and decided to Bolt myself. I got into a counter war over the thing.

Etc... :) While amusing, it left me feeling rather too good for the poor computer. Thus my dislike for it. It's like playing Magic against my creature in Black&White. Just doesn't QUITE work.

they definitely get more competitive. Except the AI still sucks. It will Mana burn for no apparant reason and doesn't always play its spells optimally. I am suprised they didn't come out and republish the game with duel and spells combined and sell it for $20. It would probably sell a few copies and they already have the programs.
