You can pick up spyware from going on the internet... Then you have the possibility of Google blowing your cover and exposing your identity and all that.

Reminds me of the time little billy got a draft letter in the mail... but there was no little billy because he was made up to get free icecream from the icecream guy.

The knowledge that the emails and data would be stored has been out there for a while, you just have to weigh whether that matters to you (without the spin presented in the first article. Couldn't get to the second).

It's not that it's stored - as most of the time it vanishes after the back-ups rotate out - even though that could be decades...

It's more on that Google is Mining each email and using the mined info to determine what ads you receive via the service...

It basically boils down to you mentioning church, and getting all sorts of religious offers... or mentiong hot rods, and getting more ads of those types...

The next question is whether or not the bot can be manipulated to gather personal information...

Passwords and reminders are sent via emails, as is other personal information.

Maybe I (and we) are more atop this stuff than the majority out there, but I was aware of all of this (I knew about the mining too but didn't mention it above since I forgot it). So again, once you're aware, you have to make the decision as to whether it's worth it.

understandably - it is worth the email as a filter for your personal email...

That's what I do with hotmail now... it filters everything through 2 accounts, in which I don't save addresses, and then I decide if it makes it to my personal account...

Man - filters on top of filters, on top of rocky road ice cream...

And i didn't necessarily mean the bot being manipulated by just google - hackers are always a threat...;)

Some other things to consider as well. It's database profile on you also includes anything ever googled for on that machine. The bots are also scaning incoming email as well, I at least have gotten spam mail I wouldn't being used in a profile of me.Email on a server after 180 days no longer requires a warrent to obtain only a suppena.Since google's workings are based internationally the requirements for a forien goverment might be even less.To me this whole ads in the emails you recive in and of itself seems to be making a loophole in the canned spam act since after these 3rd party ads are recived by you they could claim to have a buisness relatationship with you and continue to send you all the spam mail they want.I also think a database thet large and detailed would just be too attractive a target to hackers.I'm not saying it isn't a good thing for some to use just wanted to make sure people went into it with a real understanding of the service.

Definitely good information, it probably would have been better to include those types of links instead of the original ones (unless the msnbc one has it) :)

exactly... the amount of infomation stored is a tempting object...

that's exactly why I mentioned the hackers earlier...
