Accoriding to Eusebius, Constantine had a vision in which he saw a cross in the sky with the inscription in hoc signo vince, "in this sign, conquer," the night before he battled, and defeated Maxentius.
He had taken the dream as a portent that faith in christianity would ensure his victory, and had the first two letters of the religon's name emblazoned on his soldiers' standards.
