Hi,

I'm a new player. I have been playing with the 10th ed theme decks for the past couple weeks and signed up for MTGO over the weekend. It's quite a jump from the theme decks which, once you enter the full world, according to everyone are terrible, etc.

Anyway I have been reading lots of articles, etc. trying to figure out how to build my first deck. Quite a challenge when your reality changes from knowing rougly 120 non-land cards from the theme decks to several thousand. Where to start, etc?

I found an article on the WW on here to be the most helpful thing I have come across. It lays out the concept very clearly and will be the first deck I build as I was leaning toward this concept (without knowing what it was called).

I am (what I would guess) is an older player - 35. The game seems like it can be a lot of fun. I don't think I have the time or resources to take it to a serious competitive level, but I am hoping I can play some entertaining casual games while learning.

Welcome to the board.
I'm glad we (well the others on here) could help you.
Post any questions and we will try to answer them, I'll even try to answer them correctly....

You can post a partial deck and then get feedback on what other cards to add or what direction to go with it.

Play test the deck in our games forum before you go out and mortgage the house.
We have a wide range of experience and age here......

Don't be shy and post, post, post.......

The Trashman will give you the official greeting later......

Welcome!

Okay, enough chit-chat. Here's your room key, strategically located next to the room that Mooseman cries in every night. Also, here's your complimentary bunny slippers, your invitation to poke fuzzy510, and your key to the super secret administrative spa, where the midget porn is hidden underneath the drain in the jacuzzi.

Enjoy!

Sounds exactly like me when I started. No time for being the greatest player in the world, mainly just planning on having fun playing the game:D .

Deck construction seems to get easier the more you do it and the articles on here are great, as are the people, they're always willing to help you out, just ask em:)

Thanks for the welcomes.

Just a brief story here. So I go on MTGO last night and build my first deck, a WW, and I decide for a variety of reasons to go all commons. I am sick and have to go to bed, but I want to get one hand in. I start a game in the casual room with 'pauper' as the comment. A guy joins and he starts throwing out cards that are not commons. So either he doesn't know what pauper is or he doesn't care. He's throwing out equipment, which I am not familiar with at all - counters, etc. To make a long story short, I won - easily. I am not writing this to brag, etc. I am a beginner, and he must have been as well, and it was only one hand. The reason I am telling this story is, as a new player I was skeptical of balance issues (better cards = you win, etc.). I was told that this is not always the case - that often times a better player will beat a better deck, and I guess this vindicates those who told me this.

I felt like Pete Brady in the volcano episode...it works...it really works!

I will post my deck later - I am at work right now.

Or both at work and at uni ;)

Let me tell you something about my experiences with MTGO as well. Being a better player really, really helps.
I've played MTGO, starting with learning the controls with the theme decks. I think i've played about 20 games, and so far I've lost 1. This was a game in which I kept a hand consisting of 6 mountains and a 4-drop, simply to see where it would lead to.
I've tried most theme-deck matchups (aka, played with a certain deck against all others) and won.

I'm an experienced player, like you, not to brag, but there are several things that make you win a game.

The most important thing is (in my opinion) skill. Obviously, with two evenly matched decks, the better player will win. No offense here, but if I let you play with my solidarity (let alone something like belcher or iggypop), without telling you anything about it, you wouldn't know how to play it correctly, thus you will probably lose to most other decks.

The main thing to remember is, if your deck is worse than your opponent's, you will have to make up the difference with better playing skills.
I believe that this is the main reason why magic can be quite hard to learn. It isn't much fun when you play with your theme deck, and get beaten the **** out of you every time you play, simply because your opponent can afford a playset of tarmogoyfs, and has a deck that uses them to fully abuse their brokenness.

If you have a good teacher, he'll make a deck that's at the same level as your themedeck, and help you improve it gradually.
You should try out some mindmaster games on the forum. It might be a bit difficult at first, but it's a great way to learn, and doesn't consumes much time.

I've got no idea what I'm ranting about right now, and I'm pretty sure I went off topic, so I'll leave it there ;)

Yeh mindmaster is a good way of gettin to play, and it's quick. It also lets you get very familiar with loads of different cards if you play with blocks that you don't have or aren't familiar with.

I am working on a post regarding my deck. I will get it up soon. I was able to play a few more hands last night. I don't really care about winning at this point, I am more interested in learning. That said, it seems like the players who take me on see 'pauper' in the description and are assuming they will destroy me (none of them manage to play pauper themselves). I beat one guy in 5 turns and he was pissed and wanted a rematch. I obliged and beat him again in 7. I say this again, not to brag, but as an observation on guys who buy 'good cards' but must not know how to use them, etc. I am a total beginner so I don't attribute much of the winning to me, but it is humorous to see Suntail Hawks laying waste to Greater Gargadons, etc.

Also, I have lots of questions coming - I just need to do some research first so I can offer examples.
