what is drafting?

Can someone please explain to me what drafting is?
I play magic with apprentice, but a lot of times they say something about a draft (#e-draft)
what is this?

Booster drafting is when everyone opens a booster, then takes a card, passes his booster to his neighbor, takes another card and so on.

When you are finished drafting you build a deck out of the cards you drafted (you can add as much basic lands as you want to), and play this deck agiainst other decks from the same draft, with all cards you drafted which you don't use in your deck are in your sideboard.
