"The Lich deck is typical of one style of deck design. In this design, one combination or relationship is particularly powerful, and the rest of the deck is designed to help develop and protect this combination. In the case of the Lich deck, it is the relationship between the Dark Heart of the Woods, the Lich, and the Fastbond.

Each of these cards works well with the other two, but in combination they allow you to search your entire deck and have a Fireball and enough mana to kill your opponent. To do this, with the Lich out you sacrifice a Forest after tapping it. You now draw three more cards and have one mana in your pool. Now you sacrifice a Mox to Fastbond damage after tapping it and bring more land into play. You must choose between drawing more cards and bringing more mana into your pool as necessary. If done properly, beginning when you have around five lands and a couple of Moxes in play, you can generally draw through your entire deck, finding your Fireball and amassing enough mana to kill any opponent.

Getting these three cards out at the same time is difficult, and so the deck needs side themes to keep an opponent busy. Land destruction and Djinns are both used to achieve this goal. They both fit in well with the main theme of the deck and work well together. An opponent should have to expend all of his/her resources in order to deal with the quickly generated Djinns, and these resouces will be depleted by the land destruction. If they manage to overcome this onslaught, they will be just in time to fall victim to the Lich.

It is important that you bring out the last element of the combination, the Lich, on a turn in which your opponent is tapped out or only has a few mana. If he can counter your Lich, or even worse, Disenchant it, you will be in serious trouble."
