Theme weeks?

One of the hardest things of writing for this site is the lack of direction we all seem to have. What if we had our editor (spiderman) assign theme weeks and assign them to us in order to help us better focus on articles. And if you fail he should punish the failures in some way(perhaps rolling up to each individuals and abode and administering a baseball bat the kneecaps?)

What do you all think?

thats not bad

Mostly I am speaking of course for me, but I find it easier to contribute when there is a guidline for a certain period of time.

It does sound a little too much like the magicthegathering.com website's thing...

On the other hand, it seems to me like it could work nicely...

All righty, but I need help deciding what the "theme" weeks should be.

And as punishment, you must breakdance.

Anyone ever see the 80's movie "Break Out"?

Themed topics, interesting.

Suggested topics:
~Deck Building Primers
~Multi-player tactics
~Your experiences in game play; casual or otherwise
~In-depth single-card stratagies
~The 'mind game' while playing Magic

Here are my suggestions for themes:

-Phallic Week (for all the COK you'll be craving)
-Porn Week (for all those snake women with breasts, etc)
-Furries Week (as above, but for all the fans of big-breasted animal women in Magic)
-Female Armor Week (to cover all those huge points with very little substance)
-Elven Ranger Week (in honor of every geek's "one and only")

Wow, just looking at it, its amazing WotC doesn't just admit their art team and directors are just sick, sick folks who want all sorts of bizarre psuedo-porn.

Kinda stealing from the ideas behind pimp my ride, and the reality shows so popular nowadays. What if a team was made up here of original deck builders.People willing to make a commitment to contribute to and to take the design teams deck build and play it in a tournyment and give a full report of how it faired.I'm sure their would be a few bugs to work out but I envision it something like this.

Get a list of those interseted in doing this, pick one of those people to say I've got a type (X) tourny in a month and I would like a (certain card)or (certain theme) or (idea like cards with hot babes on them). Then the team builds the deck minus input from the requestor. The team would also have to have a chossen leader for that build who would be responsible to cordinate ideas from team members through pm's or email to the teamates, if differing oppinions arose conduct a vote among the team, and submit a progress report to the rest of us every couple of days as a mini artical till the build is done. Then the member the build was done for would have to take the deck to the tourny compete and give the rest of us a tourny report of how it faired.

Just an idea might go over like a turd in the punchbowl.I realize there would be a lot of bugs to work out, it's just a rough idea.I also realize we are a casual site, but I can't be the only member who has seen this site mentioned on some sites and dissmissed as a site of good players.I've seen some nice original decks on this site, maybe it's about time we gave a kick in the pants to some of of those other sites with a deck idea they never saw comming.

That could work too (I see some problems, but I don't think they're insurmountable). I probably wouldn't be able to help with this idea as much myself, since I don't keep up with any format where the cardpool rotates...

Some potential issues...

The victim, uh, I mean player not being able to acquire the cards for the deck in time...

Could be solved by proposing multiple solutions as well as giving both parties as much time/information as possible.

The deck that is built might not suit the player...

It might be too difficult to use (playtesting helps here, but most players don't do it enough) or not right for the metagame or whatever. The only solution I can think of for this is to put the victim on the design team or something similar to that.

Now for the first idea on this thread, the only thing needed is a system for determining what the topic for each week will be. It's not particularly difficult (a single person could do it with no trouble) and there's no problem with changing the system later if it's more convenient or something. I see no problem with implementing it. The only question then is "are we up for it?" and I'm not sure, myself. I couldn't commit to an article a week, but maybe we have enough writers who can...

Continuing off SeFRo's list...

Can enough ever be said about Elven Ranger? I don't think I even have it anymore. I have the one with the other artwork instead. I need to remember to get the RIGHT one, just for the novelty. While Elven Ranger is perhaps the most blatant (come on, I don't think there's anyone who would try to say that she's rangerlike) look closely at Gift of the Woods (the artwork, and yes, the female version of course). What, was that supposed to be an accident?

Now, continuing off Killer Joe's list...

Combo week

Snow-covered week
Counterspell week (or any individual card Train dislikes)
WotC sucks week
5-color deck week (not the format)
Extended week (the format)

Sorry, but I don't know what you mean there. Not the BDSM part, which is what I might WISH I could say...

But what is a soul collector?

Soul Collector is a vampire from Scourge, which is a lot like Legend's The Wretched, except she morphs, is a bit better, and has bondage dominatrix artwork, complete with little bondage victims. Its really, really pathetic they do stuff like that. As if Elvish Ranger weren't bad enough.

The Tentacled One
Looks like a Krovikan Vampire, except for that ridiculous picture...

I mean, I'm sure clever souls could pass off the Elvish ranger picture as representing something other than what it looks like. But what are they supposed to say about Soul Collector?

"Um, it's not what it looks like. You see, morphing vampires ALWAYS wear outfits like that. And the leashes are 'soul leashes' so that she can collect souls. That's what she does, after all..."

I'm not seeing it work.

Okay, here's what looks to be the "serious" list:

Deck Building Primers
~Multi-player tactics
~Your experiences in game play; casual or otherwise
~In-depth single-card stratagies
~The 'mind game' while playing Magic
Combo week
Budget week
Block format weeks (there are 9 of them now)
Type II week (ugh)
Type I week
Control week
Type 1.5 week
Unglued week
Blue week (starring Train) (this could probably extend to all colors - Spidey)
Goblins week (and all the other creature types really)
Peasant week
"Infinite" week
Enchantment week (artifact week, creature week, whatever)
Homelands week (should be for the crappiest week of the year)
Portal week (for an even worse week)
Snow-covered week
Counterspell week (or any individual card Train dislikes)
WotC sucks week
5-color deck week (not the format)
Extended week (the format)
Aggro week
Lockdown week (on decks that lockdown the game, silly)
Toolbox week
play variants week
two-headed giant week

Now, should I get a tentative commitment from people or just hope people write? It looks like I've got Isty and mythosx on board and I can assign days, or just wait if a deadline is too much.

Can people do weekly articles or maybe bi-weekly? The whole reason why we really don't have a strict weekly writer schedule is because no one has really volunteered to commit to writing, week after week, for free.

I can try to contribute to this theme week stuff through humor via Killing Time, but my decks and rants are under the PoD Casual Chronicler umbrella now.

And you said this was the "serious" list...where the hell is the Victoria's Secret-worthy artwork week? Oh, wait you mean "serious" as in "not retarded" and not as in "adults only," right? :D

And it's been enjoyable, Killer Joe.

Myself, I'm going to get this first installment of Casual Archetypes finished before this month is out. I plan on it being monthly as well. I would like to participate in theme weeks, at least occasionally, but I can't really commit to weekly articles... :(
