THE RULES

Starting the League
The league begins with a large draft. Each player begins by selecting any three booster packs from any sets they choose. All packs are opened immediately. A draft order is then selected randomly and a Rochester-style draft takes place.

In the first round, each player will select a number of cards equal to their position in the draft order (e.g. The first player chooses one card; the second chooses two, etc.) until the last player is up, who chooses a number of cards equal to the number of players in the league. In this round, each player may only select one card from each card pool that was contributed by the players picking before them, plus one card from the pool of the final drafter. In later rounds, each player simply selects one card from each player's card pool, until all the cards are selected.

Playing a Season
Before playing a game, each player constructs a 40-card (minimum) deck using the cards they drafted, plus any number of basic lands. This deck is not fixed and may be changed at any time during the season (though obviously not in the middle of a game), so long as it only consists of cards on a player's roster and basic lands.

Each player plays 3 games against other players in their division and 2 games against those not in their division. After all the games have been played, a four-person playoff will take place, consisting of the players with the top-two records in each division. If there is a tie, the player who won more games against the other will be favored. In the unlikely event of an even head-to-head record (e.g. 1-1-1), there will be a one-game playoff to determine the winner.

The playoffs will be a single-elimination tournament, consisting of best-of-three matches. The first round will pair the divisional rivals and the finals will pair the winners from the first round. The winner of the finals will be declared the league champion, winning bragging rights until the conclusion of the next season.

The Off-Season
After a winner is crowned, the off-season begins. During this time, four events take place: a draft, trades, and free agency.
The Draft
Before a new season begins, a draft takes place, using one booster pack per player. In these drafts, all boosters are opened immediately and every card is available to each player. The player with the worst record from the previous season will get the first pick in each round. Each player picks a number of cards equal to the round they're picking in. (Round 1 = 1 card; Round 2 = 2 cards; Round 3 = 3 cards, etc. This will come out to 5 rounds total.) The cards chosen in this draft will be added to the player's existing card pool.
Trades
Any time during the off-season, trades can be made between two or more players hoping to mutually improve their rosters. Players can trade cards or draft picks, but all traded items must be involved in the league. If any trade is deemed unfair, a majority vote by the rest of the players is needed to nullify the trade.
Free Agency
All teams will have a "roster" limit of 60 cards, not including basic lands. This number cannot be exceeded in any given season. If a player has more cards than is allowed by the roster limit, that player must cut the excess cards from their roster. These cards become "free agents" that can be picked up by other players. Priority for picking free agent cards is based on the order of finish from the previous season, with the worst record getting top priority. If a free agent card is not picked up before the start of the new season, it becomes "retired" and is no longer available for use in the league.

Expansion and Retraction
During the course of the league, new players may want to join in. This requires an expansion draft. New players begin by choosing any three different booster packs, which they open to form their initial roster. They can then choose one card from each other player's roster to add to their own. Each other player can "protect" up to 10 of their cards to prevent them from being chosen. New players then get the first pick of the new draft and of the free agents.
Additionally, old players may want to drop out of the league. If this is the case, they must do so immediately after the conclusion of a season and all their cards will be immediately cut from the league. Alternatively, they may "sell" their team to any new players who are interested in joining. In this case, the roster is simply transferred without any additional steps. If a player drops out in the middle of a season, all of their games are considered wins for their opponents.

Playing a Season
Each player constructs a 40-card (minimum) deck and plays 2 games against every other player in the league. At the end of the season, the player with the best record is the winner. If there are enough players, a mini-playoff can take place, with the top 4 or 8 players competing in a single-elimination match tournament.
So I imagine that things like "remaining life" and such will have to be measured to act as a tiebreaker? For instance, two players have identical 10-4 records at the end of a season, but one of those players won each of their games with one life left and one player won with 20 life left in each game -- but they each won a head-to-head game?

Although that's not necessarily a measure of who had the better series of games -- nor is library size or anything like that... how would ties be settled?

For clarification's sake, if we have eight participants, the Draft begins with a card pool of eight booster packs?

Also, would oddball booster pack sizes be automatically excluded from consideration? I know we're all itching to use Fallen Empires packs, but it's a bit of a pain in the rump. And the cards suck.

I might be able to. It depends on when we start it and how hectic uni is. I'll say maybe and if someone wants my place then they can have it :)

Good question. I hadn't really thought about ties in records. I wouldn't use life remaining, since it will favor certain decks. If there aren't too many participants, everyone could play 3-game series, therefore the head-to-head results would be much less likely to result in a tie. The fairest way is probably to have an extra game played to break the tie.

No. The first draft is probably the most confusing thing behind this idea, so I'll try to explain a little more thoroughly.

If there were 8 participants, there would be 8 different drafts, each one having a card pool of 3 booster packs. The pick order would rotate for each draft, so that every player has an opportunity to pick first. The reason I did this was because I really want people to explore the opportunity to use different sets.

My first idea was to start each player with a "sealed deck" of five boosters of their choice. I didn't like that, because it would be too advantageous for players to pick 5 packs of Torment or Kamigawa, or some other set that works really well by itself.

Then I thought everyone could pick three boosters and they would all go into one giant card pool, but in that case, I think there would just be too many cards to choose from at once and it would get cumbersome. Also, the power of cards might be really top-heavy, depending on what gets opened.

So, after careful consideration, I think the multiple drafts is the fairest and funnest way to go. I'd like to see how it works, though. It might take some time, but we could actually try holding all the drafts in parallel to speed things up, although that might be even more confusing.

Are there any oddball booster sizes aside from Fallen Empires? I've heard that if you want to draft that set, you can just combine 2 boosters and remove one card at random to make a normal pack.

I'll set the deadline for joining as Monday, April 28th. If you're definitely in, PM me with the three booster packs that you'd like to contribute to the draft.

My question remains about the off-season draft. Your original post says:

This is in reference to the off-season. I understand the initial draft, and that makes good sense -- although due to the mass of the cardpool, I would reduce the three booster packs...

Be that as it may, the off-season draft sounds like it would have a 120-card pool for the first pick (of an 8-member league). Is that the case?

And yes, count me in. I think it sounds like a good time!

turgy22

Oh sorry, I misunderstood. Yes, the off-season draft would have a card pool of 8 boosters.

So, the combining boosters thing would work for Arabian Nights, Antiquities, The Dark, Homelands, and Fallen Empires. I'm not sure what to do about the Alliances boosters, though.

Generate two boosters and take the first uncommon and first two commons from the second and add them to the first?

And are we to generate booster packs and PM you the cards, or are you generating the cards for these boosters when the time comes?

Sounds interesting, I'll play. I also think that end of season ties should be settled with a one match playoff.
