Need some help

We had a new guy join our muliti-players group last night. Being
the newest guy to join the group he gets to pick an MP variant,
made-up or otherwise, for the next game secession. What I need
help with is some ideas for what he chose. Its pretty crazy and
I'm at a total loss.

Here's what he came up with:

100 card deck
All five colors
Type I B&R list
Atleast 9 cards of each color
Multi-color cards count as one or the other(not both)
No more that two copies of a card. (sort of highlander +1)
Basic lands "only"

What the..............

Okay - so your land count is at least 36-40... That leves you 60 to build on... your basics will be about 7/8 each...

So in green you need at least 2 harrows, 2 krosan tuskers, and 2 yavimaya elders, white you need 2 land tax, and 2 celestial dawn might break everything open for you, 2 enlightened tutor, and a demonic tutor, vampiric tutor, 2 academy rectors, 2 false prophets, blue you need fact or fiction(only 1 - it's on the list), I'd say run 2 howling mines... they're not a color and can run in your 15 "other" cards... That should cover your land/drawing issues

I'll break that down now:

Green - 2 harrows, 2 krosan tuskers, 2 yavimaya elders, Crop Rotation, Regrowth, 2 Gaea's Blessing, 2 Reclaim

White - 2 Land Tax, 2 Celestial Dawn, 2 Enlightened Tutor, 2 Academy Rectors, 2 False prophets, 2 Wrath of Gods, 2 Words of Worship, 2 Aegis of Honor

Black - Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Yawgmoth's bargain, 2 Pernicious deed, 2 Spreading Plague, 2 Eradicate, 2 Vindicate

Blue - Fact or Fiction, Windfall, 2 Counterspell, 2 Mana Leak, 2 Quash, 2 Morphling

Red - Wheel of fortune, 2 Winds of change, 2 Earthquakes, 2 Seismic Assaults, 2 Crater Hellion

Artifact - 2 Howling Mine

That looks good to me... especially with celestial dawn, the mana and card searches to find it and get it out will help...

Enlightened Tutor is restricted...

How do you expect to win?

This deck almost screams for wishes... How else can you ensure to get anything you want.

Interesting mini 5-color format...

Thanks for the help.

I thought about it a little today and came up with these other
possibilities:

Cycling Deck(rift)
Slivers
Domain(battlemagi, apprenti, famili, and dragon legendi)

why not go crazy with it? Add the chaos dice variation into it.

Sorry 'bout the enlightened tutor...

Sterling grove is also nice...

And as for a kill condition... You can probably use anything you want...

I'm sure any idea you come up with will work out...;)

"I'm sure any idea you come up with will work out...)

I wish....

So far, everything looks like........... "insert four letter word here"

My Sur/Rec deck is 71 cards, before adding land. My Cycle deck is
a pile of random junky cards and the Sliver idea is rather weak.
Its probably just me. I knew falling asleep in deck-building 101
would cost me.

Here's my attempt at this formats Survival deck....

Artifacts
1 Masticore
1 Memory Jar
1 Quicksliver Amulet
1 Citanul Flute
1 Planar Portal
1 Sol Ring

Black
2 Ashen Ghoul
1 Vampiric Tutor
1 Demonic Tutor
1 Krovikian Horror
1 Bone Shredder
1 Phyrexian Plaguelord
1 Thrull Surgeon
1 Avatar of Woe
1 Visara the Dreadful

Blue
2 Fire/Ice

2 Pattern of Rebirth
1 Regrowth
1 Spike Feeder
1 Spike Weaver
1 Uktabi Orangutan
1 Thornscape Battlemage
1 Deranged Hermit
1 Verdant Force
1 Ravenous Baloth

1 Spiritmonger
1 Phantom Nishoba

Plus approx. 55-60 basic land

I think 55-60 basic land is a bit too much... You could tone it down by about 15 and still come out ahead...

Do you have any Yavimaya Elders?... What about Uktabi Orangutan, or City of Solitude even... Wrath of God is nice in your deck(didn't see any)...

Maybe even a Hanna, Ship Navigator and some Hunting Grounds would do you good... A feldon's cane, or even Gaea's blessings couldn't hurt...

Just some thoughts...;)

Where are the classic cards? Some examples:

Red: Shatter, Lightning Bolt, Incinerate, Mana Flare - Power Surge could do some cruel things in this format.

Blue: Counterspell, Ray of Command, Power Sink.

Black: Terror or Dark Banishing, Unholy Strength (always a classic one mana enchantment).

Green: Giant Growth - remember that one?, Sylvan Library (trust me: you'll need this one), Repopulate (you'll need this if you have to discard a lot at the beginning).

White: Wrath of God, Armageddon, (good ways to level the playing field if you're losing), Disenchant, Healing Salve - when you're playing five colour, you need the cheap ones, Holy Strength, Serra Angel

Artifact: Howling Mine, Feldon's Cane, Tormod's Crypt, Celestial Prism, Workhorse (this could help this deck a lot!), Icy Manipulator.

Everybodies suggestions are welcome.

I just seem to run out of slots. The hardest part is figuring out
which cards belong in a deck. Here's what I'm thinking...........

100 cards = 60 spells + 40 Mana sources.

Atleast 9 slots of each color = 45

That leaves 15 slot for whatever.

So what are the most important cards in each color? Or maybe
that's not the way to look at it. I could build something totally
original or use a Survival base and build from there. With a
limit of no more than two cards that foundation seems logical.

Between the Urza's Block and Onslaught Block there are enough
cyclers the build some kind of Slide/CIP/Rift deck. But here again
what would be the most important 45+ cards.

(40)-45 Cyclers
2 Rift
2 Slide
11 CiP's
(0-5) random

There might also be a possibility of a Madness based deck.

UZI
Deep Dog

The more I think about it the more I like trains idea. Maybe that
would be a better way to go. To be completely honest, I've
given this two days of thought and still can not think of a single
idea, of my own, that I'm happy with.

Here's yet another idea(with some of your suggestion) :D

This just hit me...

Congregate... x2...

What were we thinking...

and if you have them - blessed reversal... x2

As for the deck - you're really just going to have to come up with something you think you'd enjoy playing - the point is to have fun, and hopefully win at the same time... that's why it's casual...:D

John's deck looks kind of interesting. I have all of the cards except
for the Tree's. I'll gold-fish that decklist using one Mox Diamond
and some random card in those two slots.(probably Oversold
Cemetery)

Eater of the Dead: I got one of those about six month's ago but
completely forgot about it.(from a card shop....thought it was
interesting.)

"As for the deck - you're really just going to have to come up with something you think you'd enjoy playing - the point is to have fun, and hopefully win at the same time... that's why it's casual..."

So...True.:D

Sometimes my desire to have a good deck overwhelmes my
truely casual nature.

After gold-fishing John's decklist I've come to the conclusion that
I'm not using enough repeatable effect in my designs. Im' also
using several cards that have not effect on the game. With that
in mind, there's another decklist.

Just trying to throw out idea's......more deck idea's are welcome....

Well........my Rebels are bad.

Those darn Survival based strategies have so much utility. Its
by far the most fun deck to play. I have a total pile of random
cards in my version. John's Recur. version is still a better built than
mine but tossing out: Sliver Queen , Ertai, the Corrupted, Rith,
and/or random Battlemagi sure is fun. :D

Now I have to come up with something else before tomorrow
evening.

Q:
Does Humility stop CiP's?

I think the deck will work well... here are ideas that popped into my head...

Thawing Glaciers...

Spiritual Asylum
Color= White Type= Enchantment Cost= 2WW NE(R)
Text (NE): Creatures and lands you control can't be the target of spells or abilities. ; When a creature you control attacks, sacrifice ~this~.

And since your could have life gain - phyrexian processor...

Things to think about - absolute law, absolute grace...

Even a Jayemdae Tome would be good...

Since it wouldn't be too ahrd with the enlightened tutor - maybe a celestial dawn so you could splash some card drawing or direct damage...;)
