There are so many facets concerning this topic; first, I would think that it all depends on knowing the players. If you're playing a game with 'regulars' then you can have a good idea of how to 'metagame' your deck. If you aren't familiar with the players then obviously it would be very difficult to metagame and your deck would have to be able to, at least, take care of annoying permanants via spot removal destruction and/or bounce. Mass creature removal would be needed as well I would think.
In my opinion using "politics" is a MUST! Or at least being able to use the Jedi Mind Trick without actually cheating. I can't tell you how many times I've won large MP games due to these methods.
