This month's debate:
Is Taiwan truly independent?

This should be interesting... :D

As long as I can get my bargain-bin, size 14 Nikes at Wal*Mart for $20, I don't care.

God bless America.

Did you that they're not really called Tawian?

They're called the Republic of China.

Mainland China is called the People's Republic of China.

Confusing isn't it.

ROC claims that they are indepedent, and as for as I know, the USA reconizes then as an independent nation.

Taiwan is not in the United Nations
The U.S. does not OFFICIALLY recongize Taiwan's independence.
Taiwan is at a tactical disadvantage, even if the U.S. interferes. There's no place to retreat to.:D
Now! Let's see who has some decent counterpoints. :)

FireSlinger: Yes, I know they're officially called the ROC.

hmmm..

I thought the US did reconize ROC as a nation.

Don't we have a base there?

Why are you so interested in Taiwan Indenpendence?

I take it you've done this politcal corner before.

This is my first time.
I'm "interested" in Taiwan er...ROC independence, because I'm from Mainland China.
However at school (I live in the U.S.), a good deal of the teachers, most of the students, and all the Tawinanese kids
say Taiwan is independent.
So here am. Seeing how many people agree with me, and how many people agree with "them".
I'm also trying to be as impartial as I can.
And finally, I wanted to post a sensetive subject like Manchlot13. :D

Taiwan IS technically an independent nation, but it might as well no longer be. It's just another commie puppet state.

[This has been a warning, do not discuss politics where I can see it or I wil go insane with all my right wing GOP warmonger capitalist anti-socialist christian shouting and yelling. You have been warned.]

…that I agree with this "right wing GOP warmonger capitalist anti-socialist...THERE, stop. I agree up to there, but "Christian?" Not that BS!

You want to talk about puppet state, The Roman Catholic Church is THE master of puppetiering. Weird how "it's easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than a rich man to enter heaven" yet the Vatican has LOTS of gold...

Being a pagan, I have simple rules:

1) If God, or the Gods, have a problem with me or my actions, they will tell me. Via a bolt through the skylight while I'm trying to take a dump in peace or a simple Carnival of Souls when I expected a foil Masticore, they will let me know.
2) If I have a problem with God, or the Gods, I speak to THEM, not their friggin lawyers. (IE, popes, bishops, pastors, preachers, ad nauseum)
3) Scaring the little kids into believing the crap written in "The Good Book" is a moral crime.

In the mean time, until God talks to me, I'm believing in shiny stones and aliens.

Shiny stones rule!

And so do foils

I also agree with Hetemti about the current religous crap going on. I also live in good ole Arkansas, were you're either a god-fearing believer, or a pagan/wiccan

Down the street live some bible thumpers...

...every now and then they visit. It got interesting when one of their spawns encountered my cards...

(...Which I tacticly laid out so that the pile of black creatures was seen first, with Abomination on top along side such favorites as Phyrexian Plaguelord and Carnophage amoung others...)

You could actually see the Bible's programming overriding his reason.

"You play with those?"
"Yeah, wanna learn?"
"Nah...ugh...those have evil things on them."
"Yeah, so?"
"That...that is devil."

After a while, all I'd get out of him was
"...those is devil..."
So I pointed him back to his mother who had brainwashed my unbelievably gullible mother into the Bible crap.

Interesting thing.

I get Magic cards.
Mommy dearest says that they could be evil, and, having the seeds of stupidity planted by a few trips to church at a young age, fears that something bad will happen.

Later on, the Bible Thumptess shows up. Within 24 hours of preaching how "the Devil poses as someone good," the tile cracks, the knob brakes off the cabnet, and the well (I'm in the middle of nowhere) goes dry.

Hmmm...could she be...SATAN?!

I have no fear. I have CoPs and enough forest land to protect me.

I gotta get my own place...I gotta get a job...I gotta get some more cards...I need to quit listening to a looping midi of "Walkin' on Broken Glass."

There's a guy at my work who does the same thing.

Me and my friends will sit down and start a game, and then he will stroll by and say,

"You playing that game again? You know you will probably all end up down there (he won't say hell).

I'll just glance up from my game, smile, and then ignore him for the rest of the day.

Sometimes he'll go off and start preaching, and I'll gladly listen, because, even though I might not believe, I respect other peoples' beliefs.

Then I'll explain my beliefs, and he'll look at me like I'm some poor lost child.

I hate it!

That's a laugh.

Kind of like saying that Americans have freedom.

Can't tell if you're being sarcastic, CT.

I think Taiwan is independent, just a bit more mindful of what they do because of their proximity to China.

If you're basing it off of recognition by the UN, then another question to answer is Afghanistan independent, because it too is not recognized.

Afghanistan may not be a standing member in the UN, but I think it is a member. Either that, or maybe it's such a new nation that it hasn't gotten a membership yet.
Taiwan has been around for at least 50 years.

This just in: If Taiwan officially declares independence to the world, China's gonna exercise those dusty missiles. :D
Also, only 30 countries have recongnized Taiwan. I think they're being bribed.
