That and you've got to compete with the likes of SCG, the Wizard's website.
Actually, I think MTGSalvation is the site that really pulls in people that would otherwise come here. SCG appeals mostly to tournament-types and MTG.com is more of a sounding board to relay information back and forth between the company and the fans. No one really competes with them, since they have complete control of all insider information.

MTGSalvation, on the other hand, is basically what this site should be. It's got a very active membership, appeals more to casual players (although it is very welcoming to tournament goers) and consistently churns out new content. The only real advantage of the CPA is that it's got a more personal feel (due to the low membership).

Actually, MTGSalvation is way to big to really hang there unless you are really into the game..... it's more like a big city, while this site is like your hometown.
I have visited MTGSalvation a few times, but the shear volume of posts makes it very time consuming and more of a resource than a place to hang.

I like it here, but would like to see about 30-50 contributing members to keep games going and add content.

I bet a big part of MTGSalvation is that most of them still play Magic in real life.

We used to be like that, back in the heyday of 2000-2001, but people slowly started dropping out of Magic in real life so there wasn't any real point of posting content here and we didn't get enough new people who were still into Magic to replace them. Now, it sounds like among the active members, I'm back in the minority of not playing Magic in real life, just on the forums, and we're slowly getting articles on the front page and all, but we're just hanging steady. Like Mooseman says, if we grow and get more active members, that'd be ideal, but it is hard to get people here if they're elsewhere (like at MTGSalvation) and already have a "home site".

I play quite a lot of magic in real life. Apart from my weekly draft and judge aspirations, I play a lot of casual multiplayers, mainly while i should be in college ;)

Holy cow, it's the Rev! So that's why you're MIA, you went tourney/competitive? :)
Yea, and I truly did not like the person I'd become. To the point where I just upped, and walked away from the game. That and I saw the writing on the wall. With the increase in pack price to MSRP $4.00 per pack, and WoTC releasing an additional set per year, I just couldn't afford my level of involvement with the game. The tournament scene is now the sole domain of young college kids with well to do parents.

I actually play in real life about once or twice a month (well this year at least), but I do run some premier events (well not this year). Hey, maybe that why I'm playing more.....
I have never been a tournament player, but know quite a few of them.

RL: yes it does cost a lot to be a tourney player, in money and time.....

What I wanted from this thread, was that the active posters and lurkers on here should "get the word out", that this site exists and it seems to have worked, as we have a few new posters that have dived in to the whole experience.....
Just look at the articles on the front page......

I hope this energizes some of the older posters (and the lurkers) to participate a bit more.....

Oh yeah, that's spam.
I'd say that that's worse than the bull with the porn threads, because that actually makes me click to see who wrote me a message.

Dude, if it's someone not already posting on the public forums, it's 99% spam. Just delete it (I'll go delete her account too).

I have my own opinions as to the decrease of attendance to this site, but I doubt anyone would care nor listen.

Why do I care: Contrary to popular belief, I actually care about whom visits here. This site allows for freedom (or used to) for writers'. This is important as they are what keep the front page populated and communicate a common feeling among the rest of their community. Censor them and you are cutting off your own leg.

What should you do: There are numerous ideas I have. Please contact me directly (MODS only). However, I will share one. Once again, you can not ignore the tournament players. While you may think your 'casual' status is seperating yourself from others (tourney players) in a positive way, it is actually hurting yourself. How do you seperate the fine line of those whom play FNM or PTQ's and are still "casual" in status or definition? So, erase your prior thoughts of what is 'casual' and move on. Allow for tournament decks to be discussed and openingly encouraged.

But, I doubt I will receive any response from MODS. I hoping I will be set wrong on this stance.

I think you're mistaken here, I myself am somewhat of a tournament player, and I don't feel any less welcome here.
Indeed there is no real definition to determine whether someone is a tournament or casual player. This site is here for casual purposes, and if someone wishes to discuss a tournament-deck, he or she should feel free, I'm always happy to provide some comments.

The thing here is, that competetive decks haven't been designed by the person that posts 99.99% of the time, which is against the spirits of this boards (or casual magic in general).

Casual means you play to enjoy yourself, which means that pretty much all casual players have decks they designed themselves. Those decks will rarely win a real tournament, but casual players rarely compete in such events, so that doesn't really matters.
Competitive players play to win, but any tournament player who would like a game of mindmaster is sure to find an opponent here.

MP nailed it right on the head. I used to be around the tournament scene and loved it. But, I rarely discuss my tournament activity here. There's an occasional tourney report, but that's about it.

MP: How are you able to see his posts?

I saw he posted last, so I quoted his post using the messageid, that way I can read it, and I quoted it to avoid confusion with you all. :)

You're sneaky :)

But yeah, we have never discourage tournament reports. It's just we don't get that many, perhaps because of the name of the site, but also because most of the people here aren't into tourneys and can't offer "good advice" anyways (when I say 'good", I mean up to "tech" or whatever). We had several members who turned into Vintage tourney players - 13Nova and a couple of others - and they've posted their decks and reports a couple times, but no one really offered or could offer constructive advice because we aren't into that scene. So they gave up (I think) but I think they check in sometimes.

It's probably the same thing with Standard and other formats.

Personally, I don't enjoy tournament reports on the front page. I think too many other sites do that and it detracts from the gaming element. We have forums for that and I think it is great when tournament reports are posted there.

I'm not sure exactly what the concern was, but I see a difference between encouraging tournament play and glorifying those who play in tournaments. I've never seen anything here that discourages tournament play, but I think there are plenty of people who don't want to see someone just tooting his own horn.

I think that's my problem with tournament reports. They are very rarely about "here's what I learned" and more often about "look at me". How many times do you see, "I don't remember what he played, but he kicked my rear"? How can you learn about different matchups if all you get is a play-by-play or something like that?
