War Magic: an epic tactical format

(very) Brief Background: My friends and I have always had a fondness for strange variant magic formats and about once every year, we'd try to engineer a tactical format where lands would get laid out to form a map that creatures would move over to combat one another. The rules would get stronger and stronger as we ran into and corrected (often ridiculous) problems. The most recent attempt was extremely successful and very straight-forward, so I thought I would post it online for anyone interested in trying such a fun, deviant format.

Huh.... that is a very interesting concept. I recall InQuest Gamer (back when it was just called InQuest) suggesting something similar several years ago. I'll have to dig through my old mags when I visit my brother sometime.

A number of people have attempted such a variant (http://www.angelfire.com/games4/magicvariants/A_Tactical.htm), but often don't fully think through some of the ramifications. War Magic was an attempt to fully realize such a format (although I suspect it has a few holes that need to be dealt with). It's a fun format if you have a few hours and don't mind how differently many cards function (Horseshoe Crab is pretty absurd in the format).
