Being There

A real rollercoaster kind of week...

It started off a little rocky for me, personally. My hours got changed at work, so now, instead of getting off at 10:30 or so at night I'm stuck there till 3:30 every morning. And on Sunday nights (or Monday, this week, because of the holiday) I start at 10:00pm and work till 6:30am Monday morning.

I've got to admit the hours are probably better for me considering everything, but that 1st day of the work week is tough as hell till the kids get out of school. The good news is I've got Friday nights off now, so I expect I'll be able to take in a few store tourneys soon. I thought I'd be doing that tonight but my wife had other plans...

See, she's having some trouble at work herself lately, and she needed me to watch our kids while she went out and talked to some people about transfers and job opportunities. On the plus side, she got some favorable responses while she was out, but by the time she got back home it was too late to make the start time for the tourney.

Sigh.

So the quasi-tournament report I had planned for this article fell through, and now I need to find something else to write about.

Hmmm.

Excellent response from everyone on the Voting topic this week. I was a little surprised at the results too. I personally felt sure we'd have a split vote between the middle 2 choices, but the majority of us seem to feel that set size is OK, but that WotC should alter their release schedule and space the sets out more.

When I get done here I'll be posting a new Voting topic. This time I think we'll do the one on the Reprint policy issue, though I'm not sure yet exactly how I'll be setting up the voting choices. The thread on the subject in the Issues Forum is a little vague...

I'll figure something out.

Speaking of issues in the Issues forum, what's going on with the Baron's thread on the Mission Statement? I resurrected it once we decided a re-write was neccessary, because that's where he wanted us to put our recommendations for the changes, but hardly anyone has responded, including nothing from the other Founders.

 (here I go again!)

Please, all of you who voted for the changes, tell Tony what your recommendations are. If you can, do it like Gizmo did, in a focused way, so it'll be easier for him to interpret what it is you expect. I know, in some cases, this'll mean repeating things said elsewhere, but by putting it there too you'll make it easier on him when he tries to put it together, especially if you distill it down to the essentials.

Thank You.

More bannings this week...

I'm not quite sure how I feel about it this time. On the one hand, as you all know by now, I hate the whole concept of banning cards. I understand what WotC and the DCI are saying with reference to the domination of the environment, but I've got this picture in my mind of the kid who finally scraped up enough allowance/lawnmowing money to get their hands on their 4th Port hearing about this. Granted, it's only banned in MBC, but can T2 be far behind? Especially once they kick off the new T2 Pro Tour?

On the other hand, I never play MBC. I don't think I've ever played in a block event, so I really don't care about what goes on there. Banning Cursed Scroll in UBC didn't seem to hurt it's value any, so maybe nobody will care about this either. It would be nice to know the "Allowance set" of players won't necessarily be let down again by the company. We'll see, I guess.

And how about Lin Sivvi? Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this the first time since Extended came about that a creature was banned in any format? What exactly does this say? Is the whole Rebel concept too strong?

Or is it just that, as Dune Echo pointed out in one of the forums, that Red has been so neutered in recent sets that it simply isn't playable as creature control anymore? If a creature like Lin Sivvi is so dominating, isn't it time (and past time) to bring back Lightning Bolt? Or Swords to Plowshares, since Lin Sivvi is effectively recyclable? Both?

I think one or the other (or both) should come back, and that it's ridiculous that a creature should ever have to be banned.

Humph. Well, that got a little more involved than I expected. Of course, it does sort of touch the Reprint issue in a way, though I think THAT was more or less meant to be a vote concerning the Reserved list. I think I'll try to set up the vote along those lines for now. Please let me know if that's in error, and I'll try to find a way to correct it later.
